South Korean bitcoin demand surges while onchain profits reach five-month highBitcoin’s premium on South Korean exchanges climbed to 1.98% on May 7. That’s the highest it’s been since late February. At the same time, onchain data shows holders are cashing out their biggest daily profits in five months, with $BTC trading above $80,000.

Bitcoin’s Kimchi Premium is tracked by CryptoQuant’s Korea Premium Index (KPI). It measures the price gap between Bitcoin on South Korean exchanges and the global volume-weighted average.

The 2% reading is a sharp turnaround from early March, when the index had dropped to a 2.27% discount after the U.S.-Iran conflict kicked off.

Strict controls on funds and KYC checks on residency are in place in South Korea. There is almost no way to do $BTC arbitrage. The CryptoQuant KPI is used to measure real-time differences in demand between one place and another.

The premium jumps when Korean buyers buy more Bitcoin. But if they sell, the KPI can go down.

Bitcoin experiences nine volatile weeks

The swing from discount to premium wasn’t clean. CryptoQuant data shows the KPI bounced around throughout March.

Most of the month saw pronounced discounts before a brief recovery around March 27 and 28, tacked on about a percentage point. April stayed mostly positive, with some scattered dips.

The May 7 reading of 1.98% was the first time the index got close to 2% since the day before the U.S.-Iran conflict.

The premium had already cooled to 0.77% when measured against Upbit’s $BTC price and current global VWAP figures.

STRC rebounds to $100 as quantum fears divide crypto leaders

Strategy’s STRC, the company’s perpetual preferred stock, finished Friday’s trading session back at $100 par. The rebound provides the firm with an opportunity to sell equity and fund additional Bitcoin purchases.

STRC ended May 8 at $99.99 and reached $100 in extended trading, with liquidity at over $218 million. It took 10 trading sessions for the stock to recoup its dividend dip, consistent with its typical recovery cycle.

The rebound comes as renewed fears around quantum computing deepen divisions across the crypto industry. As recently reported by Cryptopolitan, Coinbase’s head of global investment research, David Duong, has warned that advances in quantum computing could pose long-term risks to Bitcoin’s security and sustainability.

Michael Saylor suggests they could sell their $BTC holdings

STRC uses a dynamic dividend mechanism to protect its $100 face value. It hikes yields when prices drop, thereby stimulating demand. Earlier, Strategy’s executive chairman, Michael Saylor, shared that they could use Bitcoin sales to meet yield obligations.

“We’ll probably sell some Bitcoin to fund a dividend just to inoculate the market,” he said during the firm’s Q1 earnings call Q&A session.

Strategy President and CEO Phong Le also noted the firm would offload Bitcoin if it proved advantageous for shareholders. As a result, this week, more traders have been betting on the prediction platform Myriad that Strategy could sell its $BTC. Currently, over 82% wager on an offload. At the moment, the company’s Bitcoin treasury currently totals more than 818,000 coins, worth over $65 billion.

On the other hand, some believe Strategy could resume $BTC purchases as early as Monday, May 11. However, data from the STRC ATM tracker shows the firm has only raised enough for a bit over 8 $BTC.

Powell, an “unconventional” central bank governor without an economics background, witnessed many critical periods, from the pandemic crisis to the highest inflation in 40 years, from aggressive interest rate hikes to debates on central bank independence.

During Powell’s first years in office, the Fed pursued a policy of gradual interest rate increases and balance sheet reduction. However, in 2020, as the pandemic shook the global economy, the Fed under Powell’s leadership supported markets by implementing a zero interest rate policy, an unlimited bond purchase program, and emergency lending mechanisms. These steps helped prevent a liquidity crisis in the financial system and averted a severe recession in the US economy, laying the foundation for the subsequent V-shaped recovery.

However, one of the most criticized aspects of Powell’s tenure was the initial assessment of inflation as “temporary.” As the post-pandemic economy reopened and fiscal stimulus measures were implemented, consumer prices in the US rose rapidly, with annual inflation reaching 9.1% in 2022, its highest level in 40 years. Following this, the Fed initiated its most aggressive monetary tightening program since the 1980s, raising interest rates 11 times and bringing the policy rate to the 5.25-5.5% range.
