Galaxy and Sharplink are launching a $125 million institutional DeFi yield fund backed by Ethereum treasury holdings, highlighting the growing interest from major institutions in earning onchain yield without selling their crypto assets.

The new fund, named the Galaxy Sharplink Onchain Yield Fund, will reportedly begin operations within the coming weeks. Sharplink plans to contribute $100 million worth of staked ETH from its treasury, while Galaxy will add another $25 million and manage the overall fund operations.

The strategy focuses on deploying capital into DeFi liquidity protocols and other blockchain-based yield opportunities. The main objective is to generate additional returns while allowing long-term exposure to Ethereum to remain intact. This approach reflects how institutional investors are increasingly treating digital assets not only as speculative investments, but also as productive capital capable of generating ongoing yield.

Galaxy CEO Mike Novogratz stated that institutions are demanding blockchain investment products that offer both yield generation and professional risk management tools similar to those available in traditional finance markets.



Sharplink currently ranks among the largest corporate holders of Ethereum, controlling more than 868,000 ETH. $At peak market valuations earlier this year, those holdings were worth nearly $4 billion. On May 10, 2010, developer Laszlo Hanyecz published a post on the Bitcointalk forum explaining how to mine Bitcoin using an NVIDIA 8800 GTS graphics card instead of a CPU. Today marks exactly 16 years since that publication that helped drive the network's hash rate up by 130,000% by the end of the same year.

However, this historical moment is interesting from a very different angle too, as it became the first point of conceptual division in Bitcoin's philosophy and stripped the project of its original "democratic" nature.

In mainstream culture, Laszlo Hanyecz is known as the man who invented GPU mining and later bought two pizzas for 10,000 $BTC. What often remains behind the scenes, however, is the reaction of Satoshi Nakamoto.

After learning about Laszlo's success, Satoshi personally asked him to slow down the popularization of the method because he viewed Bitcoin as a system of "one CPU, one vote," where anyone with a home computer could support the network and receive rewards.

The transition to graphics cards instantly destroyed that balance because ordinary PC users lost virtually any chance of mining a block, and mining turned from ideological support for the network into a hardware arms race. That was the moment $BTC began concentrating in the hands of those who could afford expensive graphics chips.

From a technical perspective, Laszlo simply optimized the code for OpenCL and CUDA architecture. His own post showed the exact scale of the jump using a single home machine as an example:

When executive chairman Michael Saylor confirmed on Strategy’s (MSTR) Q1 2026 earnings call on May 6 that the company was prepared to sell bitcoin, it appeared to mark a shift for the world’s largest publicly traded corporate holder of the cryptocurrency. But the move would not be unprecedented. In December 2022, Strategy sold bitcoin for tax-loss harvesting purposes — the same rationale the company now appears to be signaling to the market once again.

On Dec. 22, 2022, Strategy sold 704 bitcoin for approximately $11.8 million at $16,776 per coin, but immediately repurchased 810 bitcoin two days later.

"MicroStrategy plans to carry back the capital losses resulting from this transaction against previous capital gains, to the extent such carrybacks are available under the federal income tax laws currently in effect, which may generate a tax benefit".

Bitcoin fell 23% in Q1 2026, from $87,500 to $67,700. Under FASB fair value accounting rules adopted Jan 1, 2025, Strategy marks its entire bitcoin holdings to market every quarter, in Q1 posted a $12.54 billion loss which pushed unrealized losses directly through the income statement and generating a $2.2 billion deferred tax asset across its higher cost basis holdings.

According to the MSTR earnings call, assuming an $80,000 bitcoin price, Strategy has purchased over 434,000 BTC above $80,000 generating a $7.6 billion unrealized loss and a $2.2 billion deferred tax asset at a 29% tax rate.

If bitcoin recovers and Strategy sells appreciated bitcoins, that $2.2 billion tax can offsets future gains.

The primary goal for the company is to increase "bitcoin per share" which is the ratio of Strategy's total bitcoin holdings divided by its total dilute
