Take two: Senate Banking Committee sets a date to amend and vote on sweeping crypto legislation

Next week marks the Senate Banking Committee’s second attempt to hold a markup after it cancelled one in January.

Ethics could be the next hurdle if the Senate Banking Committee ultimately votes yes to advance the bill.

A much-anticipated hearing to vote on sweeping crypto legislation is happening.

On Friday, the Senate Banking Committee said that on May 14, it will be holding its markup to advance a bill that would regulate the industry comprehensively at the federal level for the first time.

Next week marks the Senate Banking Committee's second attempt to hold a markup after it cancelled one in January after major crypto exchange Coinbase pulled its support over concerns, including the treatment of stablecoin rewards. That issue has been seemingly resolved after two key senators released language last week, though bank trade groups have argued that it "falls short."

A few things need to happen before a bill is passed. The Senate Banking Committee needs to advance its version, and then reconcile that with the version the Senate Agriculture Committee advanced earlier in the year.

That bill moved forward without any Democratic support in the agriculture panel, citing President Donald Trump's crypto interests as a major obstacle. Both Trump and his wife, Melania Trump, launched memecoins ahead of the inauguration, and his family has led the DeFi and stablecoin project World Liberty Financial, raking in $1.4 billion, Bloomberg reported in January.
At the time of the Senate Agriculture Committee markup, Democrats proposed amendments that would block the president, vice president, lawmakers, and other federal officials from making certain financial transactions involving digital assets, but these amendments were ultimately not included.....

Bitcoin ($BTC) pulled back near $79,000 on Friday, but buying at lower levels pushed the price toward $80,000. The next big question on traders’ minds is whether $BTC will resume its uptrend or higher levels will again attract aggressive selling from bears.

CryptoQuant analyst IT Tech said in a Thursday QuickTake note that $BTC needs to rally and maintain above $88,880 for a bottom to be confirmed. Until then, the $85,000 to $88,000 range is likely to see selling by buyers who want to “get out flat.”

Bitcoin ($BTC) stagnated near $80,000 on Friday following a rejection at $82,500. Traders grew anxious after US-listed spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) posted $268 million in net outflows on Thursday.
Meanwhile, $270 million in leveraged bullish Bitcoin futures positions were liquidated within 24 hours, forcing investors to evaluate whether a sustained bear market is finally taking hold.

Cloudflare delivered a Q1 earnings beat and still watched its stock crater. The company posted adjusted earnings per share of $0.25, clearing the $0.23 consensus estimate, but its Q2 revenue guidance told a different story: growth of up to 30%, a notable deceleration from 33.5% in Q1.

Wall Street’s reaction was swift and unforgiving. Shares dropped more than 15% in premarket trading on May 8, 2026, then extended losses to over 18% after hours.

The numbers behind the selloff

Cloudflare reported 72.8% gross margins for Q1, which represents a record low for the company, down 4.3 percentage points year over year. That compression suggests rising costs, particularly those tied to AI infrastructure, are eating into profitability faster than revenue can compensate.

In tandem with the earnings report, Cloudflare announced a 20% reduction in its workforce. The company attributed the cuts to AI-driven efficiency gains, framing the layoffs as a response to how artificial intelligence is reshaping internal operations.

What this means for investors

Several brokerages raised their price targets following the earnings report, pushing the median price target to $243. That disconnect between analyst sentiment and market reaction suggests momentum-driven investors are repricing the growth trajectory rather than fundamental analysts abandoning the thesis.

Jefferies flagged near-term growth risks for the company, with concern centered on whether the slowdown is a temporary blip or the beginning of a more sustained deceleration as AI-related spending patterns shift.

The gross margin deterioration deserves close monitoring in coming quarters. A 4.3 percentage point year-over-year decline is significant, and if AI infrastructure costs continue rising while revenue growth decelerates, the squeeze could intensify.
