Tough sell’ – Bloomberg analyst casts doubt on Charles Schwab’s crypto push

$12 trillion brokerage and commercial bank Charles Schwab has launched a phased roll-out for its Spot crypto trading division.

Dubbed Schwab Crypto, the platform will be live in the upcoming weeks and will offer direct access for retail investors to trade Bitcoin and Ethereum. 

Only the two top crypto assets will be supported for now. Other crypto assets will be added over time.

The platform will allow users to view both their crypto assets and traditional assets, including stock and ETF holdings. The launch comes after recent speculation that the firm was planning a major move into spot crypto support. 

Commenting on the debut, Joe Vietri, head of digital assets at Charles Schwab, said the move was aimed at helping retail investors diversify their portfolio.

The lead plaintiff, Lee Greenfield, reported losses exceeding $40,000 after investing in the Solana and Ethereum versions of the asset.

The ruling concludes that there was no “common enterprise” according to the Howey Test, exempting Jenner from federal securities fraud allegations.

On Friday, a district judge in California issued a landmark ruling by decreeing that Caitlyn Jenner’s JENNER cryptocurrency does not constitute a financial security. The decision follows a class-action lawsuit accusing the celebrity of promoting unregulated assets.

The court analyzed the case under the Howey Test, a legal tool that defines whether an asset is an investment contract. The judge concluded that there was no “common enterprise” or technical capital pooling mechanisms to justify the classification.

Despite the plaintiff’s argument that Jenner’s fame influenced the expectation of profits, the ruling maintains that investors did not share profits or losses collectively. This technical nuance is crucial for differentiating memecoins from traditional stocks.

The defense for Jenner and her late manager, Sophia Hutchins, always maintained that the Ethereum-based token lacked the characteristics of a security. The court finally validated this stance, pointing out deficiencies in the prosecution’s arguments.

Previously, investors’ concerns surrounding the Middle East war deteriorated investor demand for risk assets, including XRP, which had fallen nearly 25% since the war began.  Demand for the token across leveraged markets has also cooled significantly. Data from CoinGlass shows that the total open interest for XRP futures stood at $2.48 billion at press time, significantly lower than over $9 billion seen in early October. Such a sharp decline in open interest suggests that speculative excess has been washed out, potentially leaving a cleaner path for a recovery.
