After a soft fork, Bitcoin would likely move through an intermediate phase in which users could sign with existing ECC-based schemes or with new post-quantum signatures. Eventually, he wrote, legacy signatures such as ECDSA and Schnorr would be disallowed entirely. That transition, in his telling, is the easy part. Bitcoin is approaching a critical area where chart resistance near $79,000 to $80,000 meets a major short liquidation cluster around $76,500. That setup suggests $BTC could make one more push higher to clear nearby liquidity before facing renewed downside pressure.

Bitcoin Eyes $79,000 as Trader Flags Repeat Top Pattern

Bitcoin may be moving toward another local top near $79,000 to $80,000, based on a chart shared by Ted on X. The weekly BTCUSD chart on Bitstamp shows Bitcoin trading near $75,000 after rebounding from a sharp drop earlier this year. The setup focuses on a pattern seen at the last two local tops, where price pushed above the high of the prior capitulation candle before reversing.

In the chart, the latest recovery follows a deep selloff that drove Bitcoin down toward the low $60,000 area. Since then, $BTC has climbed steadily and is now approaching the yellow marked resistance zone near $79,000. That area also lines up with the high of the most recent capitulation candle, which Ted says is the level to watch if the same pattern plays out again.

The broader point is simple. In the previous two topping formations, Bitcoin first reclaimed the capitulation candle high, then peaked shortly after. Because of that, Ted expects a similar move this time and says he plans to short $BTC in the $79,000 to $80,000 range if price reaches that zone.

Still, the chart does not confirm a top yet. Bitcoin remains below that resistance area, and the current rebound is still in progress. Therefore, the next move matters most: if $BTC pushes into that zone and stalls, it could strengthen the case for another local peak. If it breaks through cleanly, the pattern may fail.

A fresh analysis from CoinGecko indicates that the cryptocurrency market has entered a sustained “crypto winter” in the first quarter of 2026, reversing much of the momentum seen in late 2025.

According to the report, total crypto market capitalization declined by more than 20% in Q1 2026. Trading activity also weakened sharply. Spot volumes across the top 10 centralized exchanges dropped to $2.7 trillion in Q1, down from $4.5 trillion in the previous quarter, a steep 39% decline.

Bitcoin reflected this broader weakness, falling 22% over the same period. This came despite having reached an all-time high of roughly $126,000 six months earlier.

Notably, Bitcoin underperformed traditional equity markets during the same period. The NASDAQ Composite declined 7.1%, while the S&P 500 fell 4.8%, marking their weakest quarterly performance since 2022.

CoinGecko links the broader risk-off environment to a combination of geopolitical and monetary policy pressures. Market sentiment was dampened following US–Israeli strikes on Iran in February 2026.

Meanwhile, expectations of tighter monetary policy, associated with the nomination of Kevin Warsh, further weighed on risk assets.

According to data from on-chain analytics firm Lookonchain, the wallet, known as "15MZvK", had been inactive for more than 14 years before suddenly becoming active approximately eight months ago. The whale has been gradually reducing its holdings since that time. The whale transferred 1,000 BTC, valued at approximately $74 million, in a matter of minutes. Despite the sizable transfer, the wallet still holds approximately 1,833 BTC, worth more than $135 million at current prices, suggesting potential for further developments. The reinstatement of such an early-era wallet has sparked speculation that more long-dormant coins could return to the market, which could increase selling pressure as Bitcoin nears the $75,000 psychological level. Additionally, data from the intelligence firm Arkham show that BlackRock's spot Bitcoin ETF, iShares Bitcoin Trust, recorded the largest inflows among its peers last week. Over $612 million in Bitcoin was reportedly generated by the fund during five consecutive trading days. However, not all ETF investors are in profit. The average entry price for IBIT holders is close to $89,000, leaving them with unrealized losses of approximately $12 billion. The majority of these were short positions, with over $660 million liquidated, including approximately $353 million in Bitcoin shorts and $160 million in Ether shorts. This indicates that many traders were positioned against the rally and were forced to exit as prices moved higher.

One of the largest single liquidations occurred on a major trading platform, where a BTC-USDT short position worth over $15 million was closed. Such large liquidations often accelerate price movements, as forced buying from short sellers adds further upward pressure to the market.

At the same time, Bitcoin’s futures open interest increased by around 13%, signaling growing participation and rising leverage in the market. While open interest includes both long and short positions, the current trend suggests that bullish momentum is gaining strength as more traders enter the market.

Liquidity data also showed that sell orders in the $77,500 to $78,000 range were absorbed as Bitcoin continued its upward move. This absorption of supply indicates strong buying demand, allowing the price to push higher without significant resistance.
