Crypto News Today: Bitcoin Stuck Below $80,000 as $400 Million in Leveraged Longs Wiped Out — Altcoins Slide Deeper

Crypto markets remained under pressure on Thursday as Bitcoin held below $80,000, nearly $400 million in leveraged long positions were liquidated, and altcoins slid broadly in response to hotter-than-expected US inflation data that sent risk assets into retreat.

Bitcoin was trading around $79,800 after dropping as low as $78,720 on Wednesday — still well below its weekly open of $82,500 and unable to reclaim the 200-day moving average at just above $82,000 that has emerged as the defining technical resistance of the current cycle.
Wednesday's Producer Price Index reading provided the macro catalyst for the risk-off turn. PPI rose 6% on an annual basis — its highest level since 2022 — adding to the inflation picture already complicated by Tuesday's hotter-than-expected CPI print. Together, the two inflation reports in as many days have made a compelling case that price pressures are re-accelerating rather than stabilizing, reinforcing expectations that the Federal Reserve will hold rates at 3.50% to 3.75% not just through June but potentially through the end of the year.

For crypto markets, which have become increasingly sensitive to US macro data as institutional adoption has deepened, the one-two punch of CPI and PPI was enough to unwind positioning that had built up in anticipation of a clean breakout above $82,000.
The derivatives market told the clearest story of how one-sided bullish positioning had become. Total liquidations surged 68% to nearly $400 million over 24 hours, with the vast majority coming from long positions. Bitcoin alone saw $117 million in liquidations, of which $102 million — roughly 87% — were longs.

Bitcoin staged a strong bounce on Thursday, rebounding sharply from a key technical support level just as the Senate Banking Committee began its live markup of the CLARITY Act. Crypto markets have been waiting months for this regulatory moment and the price reaction suggests at least some of that anticipation is being priced in real time.

The bounce came directly off the 21-week exponential moving average,a level analysts had been flagging for days as the critical support line that would define whether the short-term uptrend remained intact.

Crypto-Friendly Kevin Warsh Confirmed as Fed Chair to Replace Jerome Powell

Kevin Warsh, President Donald Trump's pick to lead the Federal Reserve, was confirmed as its new chair Wednesday to replace Jerome Powell.
The U.S. Senate confirmed Kevin Warsh on Wednesday as the next chair of the Federal Reserve, clearing a pathway for him to take over the central bank’s reins.

Following months of tension marked by President Donald Trump’s pressure campaign against Fed Chair Jerome Powell, lawmakers voted 54-45 in favor of Warsh. A Department of Justice investigation into Powell, recently closed, had become a barrier for some officials in supporting Warsh’s nomination.

Although Warsh has called some crypto projects fraudulent and worthless, he disclosed earlier this year investments in crypto-native projects such as Polymarket and Solana. In an interview published earlier this year, he also said that Bitcoin “does not make me nervous.”
The price of Bitcoin was little changed following Warsh’s confirmation, hovering around $79,500, according to CoinGecko.
Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) was among pro-crypto politicians that welcomed the Senate’s confirmation of Warsh. She said in an X post that “American businesses and digital asset holders finally have a leader at the Fed who is ready to deliver it.”

Last month, Warsh affirmed to Lummis during a Senate hearing that he thinks digital assets should be incorporated into America’s finance industry. Warsh said that digital assets are “already part of the fabric of our financial services industry.”
