$SUI Price Surge Driven by Institutional Supply Lockup

The $SUI price surged by 50% in just 36 hours around May 10, rising from around $0.92 to a peak of $1.39, before ending around $1.26. This move stood out for its unusual characteristics: trading volume jumped dramatically from $213 million to $2.5 billion, yet social media chatter remained subdued throughout the rally.

The primary catalyst appears to be a significant on-chain action by $SUI Group Holdings. The entity transferred its entire treasury of 108.7 million $SUI tokens, representing around 2.7% of the total supply, from DeFi protocols to direct staking on Sunday. The transfer further compressed the amount of available liquidity in circulation in the market, as approximately 74% of $SUI is already staked. Unlike most retail-led rallies that are fuelled by hype and viral content, this was a selling-off period by big investors as they opted for long-term investment over selling the tokens.

DeFi lender Aave and other stakeholders impacted by last month's Kelp DAO hack have launched a binding Arbitrum governance vote to transfer $71 million in disputed ether into an Aave LLC-controlled address

A Constitutional Arbitrum Improvement Proposal, or AIP, is the DAO’s formal on-chain governance mechanism for approving binding protocol actions. This amended proposal implements Judge Margaret Garnett’s recent court order, which authorizes an on-chain Arbitrum DAO vote to transfer the frozen $ETH from its current immobilized address to a wallet controlled by Aave LLC, provided that the restraining notice sought by North Korean terrorism judgment creditors is respected.

If approved, the proposal would move 30,765 $ETH from the wallet where Arbitrum’s Security Council immobilized the funds to an Aave LLC-controlled address, as required by the court’s order. However, the assets would remain subject to strict legal restrictions and cannot be freely used, transferred, or deployed by Aave LLC unless permitted by the court.

The legal fight over the frozen assets took an unusual turn after blockchain forensics firms widely attributed the exploit to North Korea’s Lazarus Group. That attribution comes from blockchain analytics firms and external forensic research, and has not been established as a legal finding within either the Arbitrum governance process or the ongoing court proceedings.

Still, that attribution has been cited alongside broader legal arguments by lawyers representing families holding roughly $877 million in unpaid U.S. terrorism judgments against North Korea, who argue that if the assets are ultimately deemed linked to North Korea for enforcement purposes, they could potentially be used to satisfy those longstanding court awards.

When Strategy (MSTR), the largest publicly traded company holding bitcoin, first floated the idea of selling its bitcoin stash to fund its dividend obligations during its recent earnings call, it raised concerns among investors and the crypto community.

However, executive chairman Michael Saylor sat down with CoinDesk senior analyst James Van Straten at Consensus in Miami to explain, in his view,why the announcement was "inconsequential."

As the firm expands from a bitcoin treasury company into a full-spectrum capital markets operation, in a wide-ranging conversation with CoinDesk, Saylor discussed the company's potential sale of bitcoin to fund dividends, the mechanics of its preferred stock (called Stretch or STRC), and what critics get wrong about its trading strategy.

This interview has been edited for brevity and clarity. This is the first part of a series of stories from CoinDesk's interview with Michael Saylor

Michael Saylor: It's a big nothing burger from an economic point of view. If we were to fund all of our dividends exclusively by selling bitcoin over the next year, we would buy 20 bitcoin for every one we sold. So it's no different than buying 20 bitcoin and selling no bitcoin. And then from a market point of view, bitcoin has somewhere between $20 and $50 billion of liquidity today. If we were to fund all of our dividends with bitcoin, you would be talking about maybe $3 million; it's immeasurable. It's really inconsequential.Saylor: We use two metrics. The first is $BTC yield. What's the benefit to the common equity shareholder? If there's no yield, it's equity neutral. If there's a negative yield, it's dilutive. If there's a positive yield, it's accretive. The second metric is credit: what is the impact on the balance sheet? Does it create more risk?
