AI agents could solve crypto’s user problem

The crypto industry’s embrace of AI is less about chatbots and more about building financial infrastructure for autonomous machines, says Chappy Asel, a former Apple engineer and founder of AI nonprofit The AI Collective.

Speaking at Consensus Miami, Asel, founder of The AI Collective, a global nonprofit AI community with more than 200,000 members across 150+ chapters, argued that as software agents increasingly make economic decisions on behalf of users and businesses, they will need payment systems capable of handling low-latency, programmable transactions at scale.

“When agents make the majority of financial decisions, economic decisions, how do they transact with each other?” Asel said during the panel. “You want them to be highly systematic, mechanistic. You want very small, micro transactions. You want very low latency.”

Asel, who previously worked on Apple’s Vision Pro and early Apple Intelligence efforts before launching The AI Collective, framed the convergence of crypto and AI through a practical lens.

“The number one thing that I've heard kind of throughout this conference... even my friends who only know about AI, they know nothing about blockchain, is they've heard about agentic payments,” he said.

Stablecoins already offer 24/7 settlement and smart contracts allow programmable execution. Marrying them together is the only logical way agentic payments — without a human in the middle — can become mainstream.

Still, the thesis remains early. AI agents are still nascent, and many companies today rely on centralized APIs and conventional payment systems. Attempts to build “agentic payments” infrastructure have so far generated little meaningful commercial activity, suggesting the narrative may be developing faster than actual demand.

Samson Mow has pushed back against the idea that Strategy selling Bitcoin would necessarily undermine its treasury thesis, arguing that Bitcoin treasury companies need flexibility to protect shareholders and manage public-market pressure.

In a May 7 post on X, Mow said the debate around corporate Bitcoin treasuries has become too rigid. While many Bitcoin holders treat selling as a last resort, he argued that companies operating in public markets face a different set of constraints than individual investors.

“Strategy selling Bitcoin isn’t a bad thing,” Mow wrote. “There are differing schools of thought on this topic, but I actually think Bitcoin Treasury Companies should sell Bitcoin when it is warranted. The goal shouldn’t be to never sell Bitcoin, but to benefit and protect shareholders.”

Why Strategy’s Bitcoin Selling Isn’t Bad
Mow’s argument centers on optionality. In his view, a Bitcoin treasury company that publicly rules out selling under all circumstances gives investors, short sellers and arbitrageurs a clearer playbook. A company that can sell, hedge, issue, buy back stock or accumulate more Bitcoin is harder to position against.

“Never selling limits optionality,” Mow said. “Public markets are war. In war, you need all available tools at your disposal.”

He framed the issue not as a rejection of Bitcoin accumulation, but as a question of corporate strategy. Strategy, led by Michael Saylor, has become the most closely watched public-market Bitcoin vehicle, and any discussion of possible Bitcoin sales carries weight because of the company’s role as a proxy for institutional BTC exposure.

ETF flow concerns added to the pressure. Institutional demand through spot Bitcoin ETFs has been the backbone of this cycle’s rally. Any signal that those flows are slowing or reversing tends to amplify selling across the board.

On May 7, DeFi liquidity provider TrustedVolumes was exploited for $6.7 million. The attacker was linked to a prior hack on 1inch, raising concerns about interconnected vulnerabilities across DeFi protocols. Large Ethereum whale wallets moved funds to exchanges shortly after, a classic signal of impending selling pressure.

Security incidents like this create a risk-off response across the entire sector. Traders reduce exposure first and ask questions later.
