Japan opens door to retail crypto investing as brokerages build in-house trusts

Japan is preparing to make cryptocurrency investing easier for ordinary people as some of the country’s biggest brokerage firms move to launch crypto investment trusts and exchange-traded products.

SBI Securities and Rakuten Securities are already developing in-house crypto investment products, while other major financial companies are waiting for the government to finalize new regulations.

The move could reshape how retail investors in Japan access digital assets like Bitcoin and Ethereum, allowing them to invest through regular securities accounts rather than crypto exchanges.

Why are Japanese brokerages rushing into crypto trusts?

11 major securities firms are considering implementing cryptocurrency investment trusts, once the legal framework is approved, according to a recent survey by the Japanese financial media organization, Nikkei.

Those firms include Nomura Securities, Daiwa Securities, SMBC Nikko Securities, Mizuho Securities, and Monex.

Japan’s Financial Services Agency has been conducting preliminary exploration of whether to allow cryptocurrencies into the formal regulated investment system for some time, and plans for their implementation are now moving closer to fruition.

The agency is developing additional changes to the rules governing investment trusts and exchange-traded funds. The Authority is to update the Enforcement Order under the Investment Trust Act by 2028 to recognize cryptocurrencies as assets that can be considered investments and investment funds.

The change matters because, in Japan, purchasing crypto traditionally requires investors to register crypto accounts and manage digital wallets. For most people, especially older, less tech-savvy investors, this whole process has been difficult and risky.

Yet another crypto bridge falls victim to an $11 million hack

Blockchain security remains a perennial challenge, and crypto bridges, which enable seamless transfers between blockchains, are frequent targets for malicious actors.

On Monday, the Verus-Ethereum bridge, a cross-chain bridge that lets users move value between the Verus network and Ethereum, including $ETH and ERC-20 assets, was hacked, with the attacker making off with 103.6 tBTC, Threshold Network’s tokenized bitcoin, 1,625 ether ($ETH) and 147,000 USD Coin (USDC).

The exploiter later swapped the assets for 5,402.4 $ETH, worth over $11 million, and now holds the same in the address, 0x65Cb8b128Bf6e690761044CCECA422bb239C25F9, according to PeckShield.

The latest exploit is yet another example of how malicious actors continue to target infrastructure that connects chains or handles cross-chain messaging, rather than smart contracts themselves.

According to crypto exchange Phemex, the two largest losses, involving Drift and Kelp DAO, both stemmed from infrastructure that connects chains or manages cross-protocol messaging, while four of the smaller exploits also targeted bridge-related components.

The Kelp DAO attack in April targeted bridge infrastructure connecting multiple blockchains, specifically via LayerZero’s cross-chain messaging system. It resulted in losses of $293 million and caused collateral damage across the DeFi ecosystem.

“That is no coincidence, and it matches the historical pattern in which bridge exploits consistently produce the largest individual losses in any given year,” the crypto exchange said.

Olena Oblamska, a Ukrainian national also known as Lola Ferrari, has been extradited from Thailand to face federal charges in Oregon for her alleged role in Forsage, a DeFi platform that prosecutors say operated as a $340 million Ponzi and pyramid scheme. She has pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud.Forsage launched in 2019 and marketed itself as a decentralized, smart-contract-based investment platform. The pitch was familiar: low risk, high yields, all powered by the magic of DeFi. In reality, according to prosecutors, the platform had no genuine underlying economic activity.

The platform allegedly collected approximately $340 million from investors around the world. New participants’ funds were diverted to pay earlier users, the textbook structure of both Ponzi and pyramid schemes.

Forsage gained particular traction in emerging markets, where multi-level marketing communities served as a natural distribution network.

Oblamska is not the only person charged. Her co-defendants include Vladimir Okhotnikov, described as the alleged mastermind behind Forsage, along with Mikhail Sergeev and Sergey Maslakov. All face wire fraud conspiracy charges.

Okhotnikov reportedly resurfaced last year in a film featuring disgraced actor Kevin Spacey.

Forsage first drew regulatory attention well before these criminal charges materialized. The criminal prosecution represents an escalation from civil enforcement to the kind of case that can result in prison time.

The case also highlights the limits of decentralization as a legal shield. Forsage’s operators marketed the platform as decentralized and trustless, implying that smart contracts alone made the operation legitimate. Courts have repeatedly shown that deploying code on a blockchain does not exempt anyone from securities law or fraud statutes.

Crypto markets saw a choppy, macro-driven week.

Bitcoin briefly held above the $80k region following early-week strength tied to U.S. legislative progress around the Clarity Act. However, it later slipped back toward the high $70ks as macro headwinds, including rising yields, inflation concerns, and broader risk-off flows, triggered widespread selling across the market.

Naturally, bears dominated the week, and most coins ended in the red. However, there were still a few assets that diverged from the broader trend.

Kite [$KITE] has topped this week’s gainers list with a 21% rally, extending last week’s 20.7% move higher. With the price now approaching the $0.25 resistance zone, the key question is whether $KITE can keep this momentum going into next week.

On the technical side, things are starting to look stretched. At press time, the Relative Strength Index (RSI) was sitting above 70, which signals overbought conditions. That said, during the mid-March peak, RSI pushed above 90, so historically the token has run hotter than current levels, leaving some room for continuation in this cycle.

Backing that view, bullish behavior is still showing up on the chart. A 2.98% pullback on the 15th of May, when RSI was already extended, was quickly bought up, with price bouncing 2.54% the following day. Taken together, the setup suggests buyers are still stepping in on dips.

Against this backdrop, $KITE is still holding a bullish structure, with a potential move toward the $0.25 resistance in the coming week. In turn, it keeps this altcoin firmly on watch for strategic positioning.Humanity [H] has emerged as the second biggest weekly winner with a 14% rally. Much like $KITE, it has been on a steady bullish run, printing six straight weekly green candles.
