Coinbase has announced its financial results for the first quarter of 2026. The company reported a net loss of approximately $394 million in the first quarter of this year, compared to a net profit of $66 million in the same period last year.

The company’s revenues also declined significantly. Coinbase’s first-quarter revenue fell 31 percent year-over-year to $1.41 billion. The previous quarter also saw a decline of approximately 20 percent. Analysts note that weakness in cryptocurrency prices and declining trading volumes are putting pressure on the company’s performance.

Price fluctuations, particularly in Bitcoin and other major digital assets, have led to decreased investor interest, negatively impacting exchanges’ transaction revenues. Coinbase’s reliance on transaction fees for a significant portion of its revenue makes it more sensitive to market movements.

Coinbase also announced it is undergoing a restructuring process to reduce costs. The company revealed plans to lay off approximately 14% of its workforce. This restructuring is reportedly expected to cost the company up to $60 million in additional expenses.

On the other hand, it is noted that competition in the sector is increasing. According to Bloomberg, Morgan Stanley has started offering lower-fee cryptocurrency trading services through its E*Trade platform. This development is considered to potentially increase competitive pressure on cryptocurrency exchanges, especially those targeting large institutional investors.

Experts predict that if low volatility and declining investor interest in the crypto market continue, companies in the sector may take further cost-cutting measures in the coming periods.

Data from CryptoSlate showed that BTC extended a weeklong rebound that has lifted its value by more than 7% this week after President Donald Trump paused a US military operation in the Strait of Hormuz.

BTC's upward price movement led to the liquidation of over $200 million from short traders during the last 24 hours, according to CoinGlass data.

This came as reports of a possible US-Iran framework eased fears that the conflict would continue disrupting one of the world's most important energy corridors.

Following the news, crude oil prices entered a freefall, with Brent crude plunging by 10% to $97 per barrel, effectively erasing a significant portion of the geopolitical risk premium that had built up since late February. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) mirrored the collapse, sliding 9.82% to $88 per barrel.

Several analysts lowered forecasts after the company missed expectations on revenue and adjusted EBITDA as trading activity slowed across the crypto market. Still, a number of firms argued Coinbase’s expanding stablecoin and derivatives businesses — along with the possible passage of crypto legislation in Washington — could improve the company’s outlook later this year.

JPMorgan said the quarter reflected “a challenging environment” but added that Coinbase had “positioned the company well to operate in an increasingly digital world.”

The bank said pending U.S. crypto legislation “does set up for a better outlook into 2H26 and into 2027” and maintained an overweight rating on the stock.

The legislation in focus is the CLARITY Act, a proposed market structure bill that would establish rules for how crypto assets are regulated in the U.S. The bill aims to define which digital assets fall under the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and which would be overseen by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). Coinbase and other crypto firms have argued clearer rules could encourage banks, asset managers and large companies to expand crypto activity.
