Bitcoin had a wild week driven by geopolitical headlines out of the Middle East. The price swung sharply in both directions as news around the Strait of Hormuz changed fast.

On Friday, Iran’s foreign minister announced the Strait of Hormuz was reopened to commercial shipping for the duration of a ceasefire. U.S. President Donald Trump backed the claim, saying Iran had agreed to an “unlimited” suspension of its nuclear program.

Bitcoin jumped above $78,000 on the news. Oil markets moved the other way, with Brent crude falling nearly 10% to around $85 per barrel.

The breakout triggered one of the biggest short squeezes of 2026. Data from CoinGlass shows $762 million in total liquidations across 168,336 traders. Short positions made up $593 million of that, with bitcoin shorts alone accounting for $381 million.

Funding rates on bitcoin perpetuals had been negative for weeks, meaning shorts were paying a premium to hold their positions. The Hormuz headline was the spark that flipped that setup.

On the one-hour chart, Dogecoin is shown pressing into a pink resistance band stretching from $0.098 to just above $0.10. Rising local lows beneath this band suggest buyers have been consistent. However, Lars projects one more push higher into a third tap of resistance before a potential rejection. The four-hour chart mirrors this setup on a wider scale. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the Strait of Hormuz is open to all commercial vessels for the remaining period of the ceasefire, tying the decision directly to a 10‑day truce between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. 

The announcement framed the reopening as part of a broader effort to align maritime security with de‑escalation along the Lebanon front, where skirmishes had threatened to derail parallel talks over the wider conflict with Tehran.

Trump seized on the development, posting that “the Strait of IRAN is fully open and ready for full passage. THANK YOU!” and repeating the message again after Araghchi’s statement circulated. The White House has cast a potential settlement with Iran as reachable within days, with Trump saying talks could take place this weekend and hinting at a meeting between Israeli and Lebanese officials in Washington within two weeks.
