The company announced that it holds a total of 818,334 Bitcoin on its balance sheet, and reported that its BTC return rate has reached 9.4% since the beginning of 2026.

A16z Advocates Rebranding Stablecoins as Digital Payment Infrastructure

Robert Hacket, an a16z crypto executive, stated that stablecoins have outgrown the meaning of their original label in recent years. Several experts believe a name change is necessary going forward for the asset class to integrate use cases. However, like other tech terms, the name is expected to linger across traditional circles even after a change.

The head of special projects at a16z crypto explained in a report that stablecoins are now integral to global finance way beyond their early characteristics. In the early stages, these assets were designed to imply a crypto pegged to fiat, such as the dollar or other assets.

Basically, it was the opposite of mainstream crypto assets, which were largely volatile. In the last decade, Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) have experienced spikes and bear phases that have dominated trader narratives.

Indeed, the outlook comes as Nvidia stock continues to show short-term weakness. By press time, the equity was trading at $197, down 0.6% for the day. Year-to-date, NVDA stock is up almost 5%.
Notably, NVDA shares briefly traded above $212 in April before sliding toward the high-$190 range, where price action appears to be stabilizing.

Trust remains a primary barrier to broader crypto adoption, according to representatives from the National Cryptocurrency Association, Circle, U.S. Bank and ChangeNOW at Consensus 2026 in Miami.

Ali Tager of the National Cryptocurrency Association said research shows “the number one barrier to non-crypto holders is they just do not get it,” citing complexity, jargon and misinformation as persistent challenges.

Panelists from Circle, U.S. Bank and ChangeNOW said trust is built gradually through user experience rather than technical claims. Britt Cambas of Circle said “you are not going to get technical trust in 30 seconds,” emphasizing clarity and reducing complexity as prerequisites for adoption.

Rachel Castro of U.S. Bank said trust is central to financial services and “very easily broken,” adding that rebuilding it takes significantly longer once lost.

Speakers highlighted customer support and human interaction as critical differentiators in crypto platforms. Pauline Shangett of ChangeNOW said “the primary factor of trust for me when it comes to a web3 project is a feeling that you are working with real people,” pointing to gaps in user support across the industry.

Cambas said reducing ambiguity in products and partnerships is key, noting that simplifying complex systems can drive adoption more effectively than new features.

Panelists also pointed to education as a necessary step for onboarding new users. Tager said the industry must “make it super simple, make it accessible, make it trustworthy” to reach mainstream audiences.

Bitcoin gained roughly 12% in April, its best month in a year. So far, May has extended these gains, pushing the leading crypto beyond $80,000. And yet, almost nobody trusts the rally.

The move did not come from a rush of new buyers. It came from mechanics: Strategy added more than $3.8 billion in BTC during April, institutions ran basis trades through BlackRock’s IBIT, and short liquidations outpaced longs by nearly a billion dollars since mid-April, per CoinGlass.

Perpetual funding rates for bitcoin, an indicator of sentiment, have been negative for over 46 consecutive days, the longest bearish positioning streak in years. The market rallied into a wall of shorts and kept climbing.

But here is what is missing: spot demand. 

CryptoQuant founder Ki Young Ju has warned that apparent onchain demand remains net negative even as ETFs absorb supply. Nine consecutive days of Bitcoin ETF inflows through April 24 totaled $2.1 billion, the longest streak since September 2025.

However, much of the ETF flow reflects cash-and-carry trades, not conviction. Also, onchain analytics suggest the ETF bid served as exit liquidity for short-term holders rather than genuine accumulation amid an unresolved war with Iran in the background.

All this means that spot demand hasn’t arrived yet, despite the 12% rise. And the market is sitting on a pile of short fuel with a few potential positive catalysts that could arrive in the same window.
