As of 8:45 PM ET, Brent crude futures for June delivery were up 0.8% at $96.70 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures were up 0.7% at $98.52 per barrel. Despite the recovery, both benchmark crudes are still on track for weekly declines of more than 10%, reflecting overall energy market volatility.  A major factor supporting oil prices was the ongoing disruption to tanker traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial chokepoint for approximately 20% of global oil supplies. Oil prices fell sharply earlier this week after US President Trump announced a two-week ceasefire agreement with Iran, contingent on the restoration of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. However, shortly after the ceasefire announcement, Israel launched airstrikes on Lebanon, claiming that its conflict with Hezbollah had exceeded the terms of the agreement, quickly dashing market optimism. Iran immediately halted the passage of oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz again, accusing Israel of violating the ceasefire with its airstrikes. Israel subsequently expressed a willingness to engage in direct diplomatic dialogue with Lebanon, offering a glimmer of hope for de-escalation. However, investor confidence remained fragile, and the oil market reacted sharply to any reports of uncertainty surrounding the ceasefire agreement.  President Trump increased pressure on Tehran, warning Iran against imposing transit fees on ships using the strait and criticizing Iran's management of energy flows. Meanwhile, congestion on oil tankers and the limited number of ships continued to worsen.
