The math has turned against bitcoin miners, and the war is making it worse every week.

Checkonchain's difficulty regression model, which estimates average production costs based on network difficulty and energy inputs, pegged the figure at $88,000 per bitcoin as of March 13.

Bitcoin is trading at $69,200 as on Sunday morning, creating a gap of nearly $19,000 per coin and meaning the average miner is operating at a 21% loss on every block produced.

The cost squeeze has been building since October's crash took bitcoin from $126,000 to below $70,000, but the Iran war accelerated it. Oil above $100 feeds directly into electricity costs for mining operations, particularly the estimated 8-10% of global hashrate operating in energy markets sensitive to Middle Eastern supply.


The Strait of Hormuz, which handles roughly 20% of the world's oil and gas flows, remains effectively closed to most commercial traffic. And Trump's 48-hour ultimatum on Saturday threatening to attack Iran's power plants added a new layer of risk for miners.

The network is already showing the stress. Difficulty dropped 7.76% on Saturday to 133.79 trillion, the second-largest negative adjustment of 2026 after February's 11.16% plunge during Winter Storm Fern. Difficulty is now nearly 10% below where it started the year and far below November 2025's all-time high near 155 trillion.

The hashrate has retreated to roughly 920 EH/s, well below the record 1 zetahash level reached in 2025. Average block times during the last epoch stretched to 12 minutes and 36 seconds, well above the 10-minute target.

Hashprice, the metric tracking expected miner revenue per unit of computing power, is hovering around $33.30 per petahash per second per day according to Luxor's Hashrate Index. That's near breakeven for most hardw

Investigators Flag Coinbase Page Asking For Seed Phrases, Tool Removed
Coinbase has taken down a recently flagged “legacy recovery” tool after on-chain investigators warned that it could be used to trick users into giving up their seed phrases.

The episode reignited concerns about how design choices for platforms may clash with longstanding security practices.

Security Concerns Over Coinbase Recovery Page

It all started on March 18, when Cos, founder of SlowMist, a blockchain security firm, asked why a Coinbase-hosted page was asking users to type in their 12-word recovery phrases in plain text. Cos shared screenshots showing a Coinbase Commercial withdrawal interface that required people to paste their mnemonic phrase while also suggesting they get it from Google Drive backups.

Shortly after, well-known on-chain investigator ZachXBT posted that the page could be used by attackers as a social engineering tool, given that it was hosted on an official Coinbase domain.

“So basically Coinbase has an official page live threat actors can use to target Coinbase users via seed phrase social engineering if they wanted?” he asked.

Another member of the SlowMist team, 23pds, pointed out technical flaws on the page, saying that it didn’t have a proper sitemap and could be easily cloned. They added that attackers could copy the interface and use domains that look like it to trick people into giving them sensitive information.

There were also concerns beyond the risk of cloning, with one X user, going by Kieran, arguing that the bigger problem was behavioral. They claimed that the tool went against one of the most widely taught safety rules in crypto, which is to never share or enter a recovery phrase into a website. The existence of such requirements on official pages, according to them, could make phishing attempts more convincing.

Bitcoin Holds As Gold Posts Worst Week Since 1983 Amid Iran War

Bitcoin quietly gained ground while gold crumbled. That contrast has become one of the more telling stories to emerge from weeks of escalating conflict in the Middle East, as the two assets — long compared as competing stores of value — have moved in sharply opposite directions since the US and Israel launched strikes on Iran in late February.

Bitcoin Climbs As Gold Bleeds

Since those first attacks, Bitcoin has risen more than 11% to around $70,650. Gold, meanwhile, has shed over 12% from its peak. Reports indicate the cryptocurrency has held up better than expected under the pressure of a widening war — a performance that has drawn attention in financial markets still trying to make sense of the conflict’s economic fallout.

Gold’s losses accelerated this week. The metal dropped 3.4% on Friday alone, closing around $4,480 per ounce. For the full week of March 16-20, the decline reached 10% — the steepest weekly fall since 1983, according to data confirmed by TradingView.


It surpassed even the sharp drop seen in late January, when gold shed hundreds of dollars in a matter of days and wiped out more than $2 trillion in market value within weeks of hitting $5,500 per ounce.

That January plunge shocked investors. This one may have rattled them more.

Fed Signals No Rate Cuts, Adding Pressure On Gold

The Federal Reserve is adding to gold’s troubles. Fed Chair Jerome Powell said Wednesday that rising energy prices — driven in part by war-related disruptions in the Middle East — are expected to push inflation higher in the near term.
