Bitcoin (BTC) reclaimed the $77,000 level on Monday following a recovery in global stock markets. US President Donald Trump stated on Saturday that talks with Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz were progressing, causing crude Brent oil prices to retreat to a five-week low and setting the stage for a potential Bitcoin price run to $82,000.

Global stock markets reacted positively on Monday, with a 2.9% gain in Japan’s Nikkei 225 Index and France’s CAC 40 closing up 1.8%. Reduced inflationary pressure from oil prices caused yields on 5-year Eurozone government bonds to hit 2.64%, their lowest level in five weeks. This prospect of reduced geopolitical risk prompted investors to rotate cash positions back into bonds and equities.

Despite the overall drop in risk perception, professional Bitcoin traders refused to flip bullish.

Bitcoin 3-month futures contracts traded at a 2% annualized premium (basis rate) relative to spot markets, indicating a lack of demand for bullish leveraged positions. Under neutral conditions, this indicator typically ranges between 5% and 10% to compensate for capital costs. Still, one could argue that low leverage remains constructive as long as the $74,000 support holds.

Hyperliquid’s $HYPE token has narrowly overtaken Dogecoin by market capitalization on CoinMarketCap. The move came after $HYPE pushed to a fresh all-time high above $64 on May 24, while Dogecoin remained near $0.10.

The margin is thin, and rankings remain sensitive to price feeds and circulating-supply methodology. CoinMarketCap data showed Hyperliquid with a market capitalization of about $16.03 billion, 24-hour volume of $1.11 billion, an FDV near $60.08 billion and a circulating supply of 254.07 million $HYPE. Dogecoin, by comparison, was listed with a live market cap of about $15.87 billion, 24-hour volume of roughly $591.7 million and a circulating supply of 154.38 billion $DOGE.

US Central Command confirmed that American military forces carried out defensive strikes against Iranian missile and drone launch sites in southern Iran on May 7-8. The operation targeted military infrastructure after Iranian forces launched unprovoked missile and drone attacks against three US Navy guided-missile destroyers transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

The crypto market’s response was swift and predictable. Roughly $300 million in futures liquidations hit the books as Bitcoin experienced intraday price dips, with traders scrambling for the exits in a textbook risk-off reaction.

The strikes came after Iranian forces targeted three US Navy destroyers: the USS Truxtun (DDG 103), USS Rafael Peralta (DDG 115), and USS Mason (DDG 87). All three ships were transiting the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway through which a significant share of the world’s oil supply flows daily.

CENTCOM stated that US forces struck missile launch sites, drone launch sites, and command-and-control locations in southern Iran. The military framed the operation explicitly as self-defense, not escalation.

No US assets were damaged during either the Iranian attacks or the subsequent American strikes. The Iranian military, for its part, disputed the American account and accused US forces of violating a ceasefire agreement.

This latest exchange didn’t happen in a vacuum. It follows a broader conflict that kicked off when US and Israeli forces initiated operations against Iranian military targets on February 28, 2026.

Following the strikes, Bitcoin dropped intraday and triggered approximately $300 million in crypto futures liquidations. That number captures both long and short positions getting wiped out as volatility spiked.
