Zcash has rallied nearly 37% since its Ironwood (NU6.3) upgrade deployed to testnet in early July. This major upgrade introduces a new shielded pool and a "turnstile" mechanism to strengthen supply verification without compromising privacy. Concurrently, it marks the retirement of the legacy zcashd node, a significant architectural shift for the network. After its rally, ZEC is consolidating around $546, with buyers attempting to establish support. Immediate resistance lies near $560, with a breakout potentially targeting $600, while the $500 region acts as key support. The final testing phase precedes Ironwood's planned mainnet activation later this month.

Major Zcash miner Fortitude has opened a new mining farm in Nebraska, expecting to slash its direct mining costs per ZEC coin from $70 to $40. This forecast depends on successful equipment deployment, stable power supply, and minimal market volatility. Zcash currently trades at $462 with a market cap of $7.7 billion. The projected savings are attributed to lower electricity costs, secured at about $0.045 per kWh, and next-generation, more efficient mining hardware. The facility's location near two solar farms and a substation with excess capacity allows for load interruption during peak grid times to further reduce costs. Established in January 2025 as a Foundry (Digital Currency Group) project, Fortitude practices venture mining, reinvesting all profits into new equipment and infrastructure. CEO Andrea Childs stated that while Bitcoin's mining economy is mature and saturated, Zcash is at a different developmental stage, presenting a growth opportunity. Controlling owned sites helps manage electricity costs directly amid increasing competition for power. In a related development, Zcash developers pledged in May to offer quantum-attack-resistant wallets within a month and to fully transition to post-quantum cryptography by the end of 2027.

Approximately 176,000 ZEC (worth around $81 million) migrated to the new Zcash Ironwood shielded pool within a day after the network upgrade activated it. This move comes after a vulnerability went unnoticed in the previous Orchard pool for four years. The migrated amount represents about 5% of the 3.66 million ZEC held in Orchard at activation. Zcash stores funds in separate "pools," each representing a generation of its privacy technology. Transparent pools function like Bitcoin, with visible balances and transactions, and currently hold about 12.5 million ZEC. Shielded pools like Sapling (introduced 2018, ~582,000 ZEC) and Orchard (2022, ~3.5 million ZEC) hide transaction amounts and participants. With the Ironwood activation, the Orchard pool is now closed to new deposits. Remaining funds can only be withdrawn via a one-way "turnstile" mechanism, meaning its balance can only decrease. Migration is voluntary, relying on holders, wallets, and exchanges to move their funds. Consequently, the majority of Zcash's shielded supply is now in a pool that no longer accepts new deposits.
