Resumo

The cryptocurrency platform Zondacrypto, once a leader in Eastern and Central Europe, has collapsed. Its two top managers are missing, and hundreds of thousands of users are locked out of their accounts with funds frozen. The platform's native token, ZND, lost 99.9% of its value, and client deposits have been inaccessible since April 2026. Founder Sylwester Suszek, dubbed the "Crypto King," disappeared in March 2022 under suspicious circumstances. His lawyer, Przemysław Kral, who later took over, also vanished after a social media post in April 2026. The company claimed to hold 4,500 Bitcoin in secure wallets, but blockchain analysis by Recoveris revealed the holdings had plummeted to just 0.086 BTC (approx. $9,700) by April 2026, with millions moved to a Kraken deposit address. Estonia, where Zondacrypto's parent company was licensed, revoked its authorization on June 29, 2026, just days before a key EU regulatory deadline. Polish prosecutors have merged the investigation into an organized crime case, with the Prime Minister alleging ties to Russian criminal syndicates. The case highlights enduring fraud risks in crypto, leaving clients questioning the fate of their money and the missing executives.

Zondacrypto, once a leading cryptocurrency platform in Eastern and Central Europe, has vanished after both its top managers went missing, leaving hundreds of thousands of users locked out of their funds.

This incident serves as a reminder to the crypto industry, which is still fighting for recognition, of how quickly people's trust can disappear when they don't know what is happening with their investments.

The damage is not limited to Poland and Estonia, where this cryptocurrency exchange originated. Cryptocurrencies have gained political and institutional recognition partly due to former President Trump, whose family's cryptocurrency venture reportedly earned $1.4 billion according to The New York Times.

Nevertheless, Zondacrypto demonstrates that the old problem of fraud in this business remains relevant. The ZND token has lost 99.9% of its value, and the platform holding client deposits has been inaccessible since April.

Two Bosses Have Vanished in Four Years

The BitBay platform began operations in 2014 in Katowice. Its founder was Sylwester Suszek, the son of a miner, whom Polish media and Cryptopolitan called the 'Crypto King'. According to earlier reports, he disappeared in March 2022 at the age of 34 after going to a fuel storage facility near Katowice for a meeting with his associate Marian Wszołek.

His family believes he was kidnapped and murdered. Later, Polish prosecutors charged Wszołek with membership in an organized crime group, large-scale VAT fraud, money laundering, and illegal deprivation of liberty in connection with Suszek's disappearance.

The lawyer representing Suszek's interests, Przemysław Kral, has now taken control of the case. His last message was posted on social media on April 16, 2026, urging all his clients to remain calm. Four months have passed since then, although the Times claimed he was seen several times in places like Israel, Botswana, and Dubai.

Robert Nogacki, a Warsaw-based lawyer representing clients who have lost access to their assets, stated the following:

"It was a scam from the very first day."

The Wallet That Only the Missing Man Could Open

Kral assured concerned clients that Zondacrypto held 4,500 Bitcoin, worth about $336 million at the time, and that only Suszek had the keys to them.

However, according to Recoveris, a company specializing in blockchain analysis, this is not true. Their investigation into Zondacrypto revealed that Bitcoin reserves lost 99.7% of their value: from a recorded peak monthly average of 55.7 $BTC in August 2024 to 0.18 $BTC in March 2026. As of April 1, Zondacrypto had only 0.086 $BTC left, equivalent to approximately $9,700 USD.

According to Recoveris, similar European exchanges held an average of 308 $BTC in their main hot wallets. Recoveris noted that between mid-December 2025 and early April, the company initiated 511 transactions from Zondacrypto wallets to a deposit address at Kraken, totaling about $21 million.

The exchange refused to disclose wallet addresses as proof of cold reserves, citing the EU's MiCA and DORA regulations. Both regulations do not prohibit the disclosure of this information.

Estonia Revokes License, Brussels Deadline Expires

On June 29, 2026, Estonia's Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) revoked the license of the company BB Trade Estonia OÜ, the parent company of Zondacrypto. Previously, on May 18, the FIU had already temporarily suspended some of the company's licenses, preventing it from accepting new clients.

The agency added that its powers are limited, as its goal is to monitor compliance with anti-money laundering laws, not to verify whether client funds actually exist and are stored securely.

The timing of the crash added drama to the situation. Article 143 of MiCA stipulates that service providers operating under previously applicable national regimes can only continue their activities until July 1, 2026, or until their application is approved or rejected by the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA). Zondacrypto's Estonian license disappeared just two days before this deadline.

Prosecutors Include the Case in Organized Crime Scheme

According to a statement published on August 3, the investigation into the 'Zondacrypto' case, being conducted by the Regional Prosecutor's Office in Katowice, has been merged with an investigation being conducted by the National Prosecutor's Office of the Silesian region under its Department for Organized Crime and Corruption.

The prosecution is conducting a series of investigations concerning the creation and operation of BitBay and Zondacrypto, including an investigation related to the disappearance of Suszek.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk accused Zondacrypto of having ties to Russian criminal syndicates and intelligence services, pointing to the company's financial links to right-wing politicians and events in Poland.

Speaking in the Sejm on April 17, he stated that Zondacrypto's rise to success began "with money from the Russian mafia."

For now, clients are concerned with just two questions: the fate of their deposits and the future of the two missing executives.

Phantom Discontinues Support for Sui as Network Struggles to Recover

On September 24, Phantom wallet will discontinue support for the Sui blockchain, giving users a few weeks to migrate their assets. This marks the end of a partnership that began with much fanfare in January 2025, when Sui became the fourth Layer 1 network supported by the then-15-million-user wallet. Phantom is also dropping support for Monad in August, indicating a broader streamlining of its multi-chain offerings rather than a move specific to Sui. The announcement coincides with a significant downturn for the Sui network. Its Total Value Locked (TVL) in DeFi has plummeted from approximately $2 billion in early 2026 to under $1 billion by July. The price of SUI has also fallen sharply from its all-time high of $5.36 in January 2025 to around $0.83 at the time of reporting. Phantom provided users with two main migration paths: converting SUI to a wrapped version on Solana directly within the wallet (with no proprietary Phantom fee until the cutoff date), or exporting their seed phrase to another Sui-compatible wallet like Sui Foundation's preferred wallet, Sui Wallet. The company emphasized that assets remain on the blockchain, not in the wallet, and warned users against potential migration scams. While both parties describe the split as mutual and leave open the possibility of future collaboration, the loss of a major wallet's support highlights the ongoing fragmentation in the blockchain industry. This poses a challenge for Sui's retail accessibility, even as the network maintains other infrastructure support, such as from Circle for its stablecoins. The future will reveal whether other wallets follow Phantom's lead or seek to attract the displaced Sui user base.
