The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has restricted a Coinbase advertising campaign for downplaying the risks of cryptocurrency investing and for presenting the exchange as a solution to the country's cost-of-living crisis. The 2-minute video ad, which used satirical musical scenes of citizens singing "everything is fine" amidst a collapsing city, was deemed irresponsible. The ASA stated that using humor to address serious financial concerns risked portraying high-risk crypto products as a simple solution. The ad, which was rejected by TV ad clearance body Clearcast, was widely circulated on posters in high-traffic areas like the London Underground. The regulator noted the ads lacked required risk warnings. Coinbase defended the campaign, stating it was intended to spark discussion about the financial system and was not meant to provide simplistic solutions or mislead viewers.

The advertising overseer of the United Kingdom has restricted a Coinbase campaign that reportedly dismissed the risks of crypto investing and advertised the exchange as a solution to the cost-of-living crisis of the country.

As per the U.K. Advertising Standards Authority, the advertisements were called irresponsible and dismissed the risks of cryptocurrency, as reported by The Guardian on January 28. Initially, a 2-minute ad was released by Coinbase in July 2025 in which the video featured satirical musical scenes of cheerful citizens.

The citizens were singing slogans such as “everything is fine, everything is grand” as their homes fell into collapse and underwent power outages as the city got messed up with overflowing bins and rats.

The video then concludes with a dramatic line, “If everything is fine, then do not change anything,” before turning out to the Coinbase logo.

No Evidence For Claim Became The Ground For Rejection

The advertising watchdog stated to the global advisory council of Coinbase that we thought that using humour to address serious financial concerns, with a cue to change, risked showing complex, high-risk financial products as a swift or obvious response to those concerns.

The advertisement has so far been discarded by Clearcast, the body which screens TV commercials in the country. The grounds provided for rejection were that it showed crypto as a potential solution to economic challenges, without having much evidence for the claim.

However, the ASA claimed that it was still circulated widely on different platforms, having three posters that were shown in high-traffic areas like the London Underground and rail stations.

Moreover, the claims also included not comprising any risk warnings, mainly given that the Financial Conduct Authority has ordered that crypto promotions must come with significant risk disclosures.

A spokesperson from Coinbase also came up defending the campaign and stated that the video was intended to evoke discussion regarding the state of financial condition in the country and the need to look for better futures. He also highlighted that the ad was not made to give simplistic solutions or mislead viewers.

How Many Tokens Away Is Yang Zhilin from the 'Moon Chasing the Light'?

The article explores the intense competition between two leading Chinese AI companies, DeepSeek and Kimi (Moon Dark Side), and the mounting pressure on Yang Zhilin, the founder of Kimi. While DeepSeek re-emerged after 15 months of silence with its powerful V4 model—boasting 1.6 trillion parameters and low-cost, long-context capabilities—Kimi has been focusing on long-context processing and multi-agent systems with its K2.6 model. Yang faces a threefold challenge: technological rivalry, commercialization pressure, and investor expectations. Despite Kimi’s high valuation (reaching $18 billion), its revenue heavily relies on a single product with low paid conversion rates, while DeepSeek’s strategic silence and open-source influence have strengthened its market position and valuation prospects, now targeting over $20 billion. Both companies reflect broader trends in China’s AI ecosystem: Kimi aims for global influence through open-source contributions and agent-based advancements, while DeepSeek prioritizes foundational innovation and hardware independence, notably shifting to Huawei’s chips. Their competition is seen as vital for China’s AI progress, with the gap between top Chinese and U.S. models narrowing to just 2.7% on the Elo rating scale. Ultimately, the article argues that this rivalry, though anxiety-inducing for leaders like Zhilin, is essential for driving innovation and solidifying China’s role in the global AI landscape.
