Polish authorities are reconsidering the need for clear regulation to protect citizens from cryptocurrency fraud. During a budget meeting, Prime Minister Donald Tusk commented on the Zondacrypto exchange scandal, which has become a major corruption case. Tusk expressed regret that the bankruptcy of Zondacrypto and the recent arrest of the Polish Olympic Committee president have overshadowed the proceedings. He described the case as a "well-organized system" involving well-known names. Tusk announced he will ask the Speaker of the Sejm to organize a revote on the Crypto-Asset Market Act, which President Andrzej Duda vetoed for a third time in June. Tusk stated that no one can now deny the seriousness of the problem or treat it lightly. He directly implicated President Duda in the Zondacrypto scandal, which allegedly caused losses of up to $94 million for clients, suggesting that vetoing the law was politically motivated. The former head of Zondacrypto criticized the proposed law as a "serious step back" for the industry. Due to the veto, Poland is in limbo, unable to implement the EU's MiCA regulation, leaving national cryptocurrency exchanges unable to register.

Polish authorities are reconsidering the need for clear regulations to protect citizens from cryptocurrency fraud.

On Friday, during a Council of Ministers meeting discussing the 2027 budget draft, Tusk commented on the current situation with the Zondacrypto exchange, which has turned into one of the country's largest cryptocurrency-related corruption cases.

Tusk expressed regret that the budget preparation process was overshadowed by Zondacrypto's bankruptcy and the recent detention of Polish Olympic Committee President Radosław Piesiewicz as part of the corruption investigation.

"This is not some ordinary bribe, not a case involving one politician. It seems to be a well-organized system featuring names known from other cases," stated Tusk, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.

Tusk declared that following this, he would appeal to the Speaker of the Sejm to organize a re-vote on the Cryptocurrency Market Act, which President Karol Nawrocki vetoed for the third time on June 11.

"Perhaps the moment has come when no one will have the courage to say 'there is no problem' or that we still have plenty of time. At this stage, I can no longer imagine President Nawrocki, Chairman Kaczyński, and former Prime Minister Morawiecki treating this issue with such incredible lightness," stated Tusk.

Tusk directly implicated President Nawrocki in the Zondacrypto bankruptcy scandal, which reportedly caused affected clients to lose up to $94 million.

On social media, he emphasized that this was the reason for vetoing the law, accusing the ruling party of receiving "money for watches worth 40,000 euros, for media, election campaigns, and the funds of right-wing politicians."

Przemysław Kral, former head of Zondacrypto, criticized the law, calling it a "serious step backward" and assuring that if passed, the national cryptocurrency industry would "suffer."

As a result of the veto, Poland finds itself in a sort of limbo, unable to apply the provisions of the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA). Consequently, national exchanges still cannot register in Poland.

Ripple (XRP) Company Announces Plans for Major Future Update

Ripple (XRP) has announced a four-phase plan to prepare the XRP Ledger (XRPL) for future security threats posed by quantum computers. The company's senior director of engineering stated the goal is to build necessary infrastructure before quantum computers become a direct threat, aiming to minimize impact on existing systems, user assets, and network operations. The plan begins with identifying potential quantum vulnerabilities within XRPL, followed by testing quantum-resistant cryptographic methods. The next phase involves parallel testing of existing security mechanisms and new quantum-resistant solutions to ensure reliability and prevent disruption for users and applications. The final phase would involve transitioning the XRPL to more comprehensive, quantum-resistant security standards if the technology matures. Ripple is also developing contingency plans for a faster-than-expected advancement of quantum computing, which could accelerate the transition timeline. A current XRPL feature allowing users to change the keys controlling their accounts without altering the accounts themselves is seen as a potential advantage in any future migration. However, Ripple cannot unilaterally change transaction validation rules or network-wide cryptographic standards; such updates require coordination and approval from independent validators via XRPL's governance process. While quantum computers are not yet capable of breaking the cryptography used by major blockchains like Bitcoin or XRPL, developers across the industry are already evaluating transition scenarios to quantum-resistant algorithms due to the long-term risks they pose to public-key cryptography.
