Bitcoin to $1M by 2030 is ‘mathematically impossible’ says Markus Thielen
Markus Thielen, head of research at 10x Research, argues that the popular prediction of Bitcoin reaching $1 million by 2030 is "mathematically impossible." He bases this on historical capital inflows, noting that $1 trillion in inflow over 15 years achieved a current market cap of around $1.28 trillion. To reach $1 million per Bitcoin—a 15x increase from current prices near $64,000—Thielen calculates it would require an additional $15 trillion in capital over the next four years, equivalent to roughly 25% of the total US stock market's value. He contends that attracting such a massive inflow is unrealistic.
Thielen further explains that higher Bitcoin prices weaken retail sentiment, as many investors psychologically prefer owning whole units rather than fractions. He cautions against expecting a rapid rebound to new all-time highs, suggesting that even reaching $100,000 would be a significant achievement.
While high-profile figures like Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong have touted the $1 million target, Thielen views such extravagant predictions as media-friendly but potentially harmful to retail investors who may adopt overly optimistic expectations. He does not entirely rule out a $1 million price but states it would require an extreme scenario like a "major credit event, implosion of everything."
