The project is named SBI Crypto Fund, with 51% owned by SBI Financial Services and 49% by the company Gumi gC Labs. According to the announcement, the fund plans to purchase Bitcoin and major altcoins, generating income through staking. To manage risks, the fund promises to conduct portfolio rebalancing and apply hedging instruments.
SBI Financial Services, as part of the SBI holding, develops financial services related to digital assets. The investment group Daiwa Securities Group and some other Japanese firms have also invested in the project.
The mobile game developer Gumi is also developing its own business in digital assets, having built up a reserve of XRP. As of April 30, the value of Gumi's crypto assets amounted to 14.13 billion yen ($86 million), nearly doubling compared to 7.58 billion yen ($46 million) a year earlier.
In July, Japan's parliament adopted amendments to the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act (FIEA) and the Payment Services Act (PSA), permitting the launch of exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that track cryptocurrency performance on the Tokyo Stock Exchange starting in 2028.
Earlier, the Japanese corporate pension fund Nationwide Business Corporate Pension Fund announced plans to invest about 1% of its assets in cryptocurrencies. The fund serves approximately 1,200 small and medium-sized businesses.
