Senate Majority Leader John Thune has filed a cloture motion on the bill known as the "Clarity Act," which includes comprehensive regulations for the cryptocurrency market. This move paves the way for a crucial procedural vote on the bill upon Congress members' return from the August recess.
According to a Senate agreement, a vote on cloture to advance the Clarity Act is scheduled for Tuesday, September 15th.
Adoption of the cloture amendment does not automatically mean the Clarity Act will be passed. The vote will only limit debate on the amendment to proceed with the bill's consideration, thereby moving the legislation forward on the Senate's agenda.
Passing this motion requires the support of 60 senators. Given that Republicans hold 53 seats in the Senate, even with the support of all Republican senators, at least 7 Democratic or independent senators must vote for it.
The Clarity Act aims to clarify the regulatory framework for the cryptocurrency market in the United States and more clearly define which institutions will oversee digital assets. However, negotiations regarding the final version of the bill are ongoing in the Senate.
It is reported that lawmakers are attempting to resolve their disagreements, particularly on issues of ethics, anti-illegal financing rules, and how to incorporate provisions developed by the Senate Agriculture Committee into the bill.
The filing of the cloture motion is seen as a significant procedural step, indicating that Republican leadership plans to make the Clarity Act a top agenda priority in the Senate for September.
