85% of concentrated liquidity is underutilized — Meaning for DeFi?

Resumo

A recent Dune report reveals that concentrated liquidity, designed to enhance capital efficiency in decentralized exchanges, is largely underutilized. In the first half of 2026, an average of 29.4% of liquidity across major protocols like Uniswap v3/v4, PancakeSwap v3, and Aerodrome Slipstream was idle—outside active trading ranges—resulting in no fee generation. This represents about $542 million in idle capital weekly and an estimated $150 million in lost annual fees for LPs. When considering technically available but unused liquidity, the underutilization rate rises to approximately 85%. The study indicates that much of this idle capital, particularly over $200 million untouched for more than 90 days, stems from liquidity providers not actively managing their positions. Individual investors, not automated managers, hold the vast majority of this idle liquidity (e.g., 94% on Ethereum). Automated managers maintain far more active and in-range positions. Notably, Uniswap v4 has not resolved the issue; about 30.5% of its liquidity remains out of range, and while it introduced hooks for external yield strategies, only 10% of its TVL uses them, with none currently generating yield from idle capital.

A significant amount of the liquidity that users contribute to decentralized exchanges isn’t really being used to speed up trades, according to a recent report by Dune.

To put things in perspective, concentrated liquidity was created to increase the capital efficiency of decentralized exchanges. This was done by enabling liquidity providers (LPs) to distribute funds within particular price ranges where trading is most likely to take place.

However, the study discovered that during the first half of 2026, an average of 29.4% of liquidity was outside the range of active trading. Thanks to the same, no trading fees were generated.

This amounted to approximately $542 million in idle capital per week and an estimated $150 million in lost annual fee income for liquidity providers across the four protocols.

For context, the 4 protocols included were Uniswap v3, Uniswap v4, PancakeSwap v3, and Aerodrome Slipstream.

Underutilized concentrated liquidity

Considering technically available but never used liquidity, about 85% of capital was underutilized.

The fact that more than $200 million in idle liquidity had not been repositioned in more than 90 days may be evidence that many LPs do not actively manage their holdings.

This also suggested that even though concentrated liquidity should increase efficiency, many LPs still find it difficult to maintain their positions in line with market prices.

Individual investors suffered the most

Additionally, the study discovered that automated managers maintained capital activity, while individual investors owned the majority of idle liquidity.

Wallets on Ethereum, for instance, had 94% of idle capital and 91% of Uniswap v3 liquidity. 92% of idle liquidity and 78% of liquidity were under control on Arbitrum. On Base, individual users oversaw 82% of the idle capital, even though smart contracts held roughly 50% of the liquidity.

Source: Dune

This, because only 6.5% of their positions were out of range, compared to about 30% for wallets. This also indicated that automated managers have been far more successful than individual LPs at maintaining liquidity.

Additional loopholes

Finally, the study found that the idle liquidity issue has not been resolved by Uniswap v4.

Like Uniswap v3, about 30.5% of its liquidity is still out of range even after hooks were added that might allow idle capital to be used in external yield strategies.

Also, just 10% of v4’s TVL actually uses hooks while none of them produce yield from idle liquidity at the moment.

Final Summary

  • In H1 2026, approx. 29.5% of liquidity was outside the range of active trading.
  • Instead of AMMs, individual investors owned the majority of idle liquidity.

Perguntas relacionadas

QAccording to the report, what percentage of concentrated liquidity was found to be underutilized when considering technically available but never used capital?

AApproximately 85% of capital was underutilized.

QWhat was the estimated annual lost fee income for liquidity providers across the four protocols studied (Uniswap v3, Uniswap v4, PancakeSwap v3, Aerodrome Slipstream)?

AAn estimated $150 million in annual fee income was lost.

QWhich group of users was found to own and control the majority of the idle liquidity, according to the study?

AIndividual investors (wallets) owned and controlled the majority of the idle liquidity, as opposed to automated managers.

QHas the introduction of hooks in Uniswap v4 successfully resolved the idle liquidity issue?

ANo, it has not. Like Uniswap v3, about 30.5% of Uniswap v4's liquidity remains out of range, and currently, none of the hooks in use produce yield from idle liquidity.

QWhat does the high amount of liquidity not repositioned for over 90 days suggest about many liquidity providers (LPs)?

AIt suggests that many LPs do not actively manage their holdings, finding it difficult to maintain their positions in line with market prices despite the design of concentrated liquidity to increase efficiency.

Russia's Supreme Court Launches 'Digital Justice' System with Artificial Intelligence Integration

Russia's Supreme Court Chairman Igor Krasnov announced the launch of a new automated system, "Digital Justice," at the BRICS Supreme Court Chairs Forum in New Delhi on September 5. The project aims to unify all existing court services and integrate them with the government's single public services portal. A key focus is the extensive adoption of AI technologies, built on Russian technical solutions, across all stages of judicial proceedings. Four large language models are already in use in several regions, trained on the Supreme Court's legal positions and precedent-setting decisions. AI will be applied to tasks including transcribing court hearings, analyzing evidence, and drafting document templates. A new AI Competence Center within the Supreme Court will oversee implementation, with a primary goal of ensuring judicial consistency, reducing errors, and increasing predictability. Officials emphasize that AI will serve as an assistant, not a judge. Final decisions, evidence evaluation, and legal application remain a human prerogative. The article notes a technical risk: large language models are prone to "confident" errors without clear signs of failure. Errors could potentially enter official procedural documents before a human notices. Training models on Supreme Court practice mitigates risks in narrow domains but does not change their fundamental nature of predicting likely text rather than verifying facts. The question remains whether judges will have sufficient time to verify every AI-generated template.

CoinShares: Bitcoin Once Again Trades on Par with Gold as a Safe-Haven Asset

According to a CoinShares market update from September 4, 2026, Bitcoin is increasingly trading as a safe-haven asset alongside gold, driven by renewed investor focus on currency devaluation. The catalyst for its recent rise to briefly touch $80,100 was a combination of concerns over US fiscal sustainability, the US Treasury's decision to increase purchases of long-term bonds, and dovish comments from Fed Governor Christopher Waller. Monetary policy remains a key constraint. Hawkish remarks from Fed officials initially fueled rate hike expectations, leading to outflows from digital asset investment products. However, sentiment reversed, with inflows recovering to $1 billion this week. The situation in Iran is a central risk, as potential oil supply disruptions could push inflation and Fed expectations higher, negatively impacting Bitcoin in the short term. The yield on US 10-year Treasuries remains elevated near 4.7%, reflecting debt sustainability concerns, which, if they escalate, could benefit both gold and Bitcoin. For a sustained break above $80,000, CoinShares argues either a resolution to the Iran conflict or a further significant loss of confidence in US sovereign debt is needed. Until then, range-bound trading is likely. Key upcoming events are August inflation data and the September Fed meeting, which will clarify the internal policy split between inflation and employment focus. Machine analysis suggests the market may react more sharply to inflation data than to Fed decisions themselves.

Solana Is Anxious: Official Support Propels Meme Token to Over $100 Million Market Cap, Toly Also Tries to Woo Robinhood

"Solana Pushes Back: Official Endorsement Fuels Memecoin Surge, Toly Courts Robinhood Over the weekend, two memecoins on Solana surpassed $100 million in market cap, marking a significant move by the ecosystem to counter the dominant memecoin trends on Robinhood Chain and BSC. The primary driver is StonkFun, a Solana-based 'stonk' (stock-paired memecoin) launchpad similar to Robinhood's Long. Its platform token, STONK, paired with a Solana SPY token, and another token, ZCAT, both briefly hit $1B valuations. This surge is largely attributed to direct, public endorsements from the official Solana account and co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko (Toly), who interacted with StonkFun's posts, signaling high-level support. The article positions this as Solana's strategic response to falling behind in the latest memecoin cycle, which has been dominated by stock-paired tokens. These tokens are seen as more favorable than pure memes because they can drive trading for real-world asset (RWA) stock tokens, lending a veneer of legitimacy. With Pump.fun, Solana's previous memecoin hub, shifting focus, StonkFun has become Solana's chosen vehicle to reclaim market share and narrative. Further highlighting Solana's aggressive stance, Toly publicly critiqued Robinhood Chain's deal with Arbitrum, suggesting it would be more cost-effective to build on Solana. This was quickly rebutted by an Arbitrum co-founder, who argued their model is more profitable for Robinhood. The article concludes that with Robinhood unlikely to switch, Solana's memecoin comeback rests on its own efforts, with StonkFun at the forefront."
