Speaking at the Semafor World Economic Conference, he said, 'I originally thought there could be multiple rate cuts in 2026; however, if this situation persists and we continue to see no decline in inflation, with inflation remaining elevated, realistically, this would push the timeline beyond 2026. Our responsibility is to bring inflation back to 2%.' Goolsbee, who was previously one of the more optimistic members of the Fed, believed that tariff-driven inflation would decrease this year, allowing the Fed to resume rate cuts. However, his confidence has waned. He remarked, 'In some cases, rates may be raised; in other cases, it may all prove to be temporary—if the oil price shock in the Middle East is resolved and inflation declines again, it seems we are moving back toward the 2% target, then rate cuts would also be back on the agenda.'
