Waller said he does not want the Fed to raise interest rates prematurely to avoid triggering an economic recession, but also emphasized that the Fed cannot repeat the mistake of reacting too slowly to inflation as it did in 2021. He believes the current job market remains stable and there are "credible reasons" to think inflation can continue to decline without further tightening of policy. However, Waller warned that relying solely on market expectations for inflation to fall is not enough to justify the Fed staying on hold. If the Fed waits to act until market confidence fades, it may have to raise rates more aggressively to catch up with inflation. "We cannot tolerate ignoring inflation until it completely disappears," he said.
