Iran's Supreme Leader Advisor: US-Iran Negotiations Stalled Over Frozen Assets, Denies Meeting Between Supreme Leader and Trump

On June 6, CNN reported that a senior Iranian official stated on Friday that a potential peace agreement between the US and Iran depends on whether the Trump administration agrees to unfreeze $24 billion of Iranian assets, warning that if the US resumes military actions, it would "walk down a dark path." In an interview with CNN, the advisor to Iran's Supreme Leader said, "Negotiations have reached a stalemate, and Trump must break this deadlock; the ball is in Trump's court now." Reports indicate that Iran demands the immediate unfreezing of $12 billion in frozen funds upon signing a temporary agreement with the US, with an additional $12 billion to be unfrozen in subsequent phases. However, US officials are concerned that unfreezing funds at this stage could weaken critical leverage against the Iranian regime. The advisor characterized the unfreezing of funds as a trust-building measure, stating that if the Trump administration were to unfreeze these funds, it would "open a new chapter" for the future of Iran and the US. He also warned that if the US reignites conflict, Iran would extend the "war" beyond the Persian Gulf, with military operations potentially expanding from the Strait of Hormuz to the Indian Ocean, the Mandeb Strait, the Red Sea, and the Mediterranean. He noted, "We will escalate the war to a new level by attacking other US military bases that have been previously targeted," but he also added, "the likelihood of war breaking out is low." When asked about a possible meeting between Trump and Mojtaba, he stated, "This will not happen; we are currently in the first stage of negotiations, and Trump has stalled the talks." This week, Trump mentioned that he and Mojtaba "seem to get along well" and expressed that he would be "honored" to meet him.
