On June 5, Zcash founder Zooko announced that security researcher Taylor Hornby discovered a serious forgery vulnerability in the Zcash Orchard pool on May 29 and reported it to the Zcash Open Development Lab (ZODL). ZODL subsequently coordinated an emergency response within the ecosystem, and the fix was completed by June 2. Shielded Labs stated that the vulnerability is real and exploitable, with Taylor having written an exploit in a local testing environment that could generate unlimited and undetectable forged ZEC. Due to the privacy properties of Orchard, it is not possible to prove through cryptographic means whether the vulnerability was exploited before the fix; however, they believe the likelihood of prior exploitation is low. Shielded Labs is exploring a network upgrade proposal to deploy a new shielded pool and implement turnstile accounting for all tokens from the Orchard pool, allowing anyone to verify the integrity of the Zcash supply and prove that there are no forged ZEC in the Orchard pool.
