Pony Ma Responds to Concerns About Tencent's AI Lag: 'We Thought We Were on the Ship, Only to Find It Leaking'

On May 13, at Tencent's shareholder meeting, Chairman and CEO Pony Ma stated that Tencent's early foundational capabilities in AI were not outstanding. In recent years, the company has been continuously addressing its shortcomings through talent development, team management, and internal training, and is now gradually getting on the right track for development. In response to external doubts about whether Tencent's AI is lagging behind, Ma provided his most candid response to date. He said, 'A year ago, we thought we were on the ship, but later found that the ship was leaking. Now we feel like we are standing on it, but we can't sit down yet. We hope the ship can go a bit faster.' Ma also emphasized that Tencent may not be the fastest in seizing opportunities in the industry, but it is committed to following the right path and steadily leveraging its unique advantages. 'We can't just look at others and casually jump in to take their territory. We have done that in the past, but it mostly ended in failure.'
