Federal Police in Brazil has taken action against a high-profile drug trafficking ring that used cryptocurrency to launder the funds obtained for its narcotics export activity to Europe.

On Thursday, the Brazilian federal Police announced the results of Operation Commodity, which terminated the activities of a group that used the port of Rio de Janeiro to smuggle cocaine hidden in coffee, cement, and mortar shipments that were mainly sent to Europe, using a logistics network spanning South America, Europe, and Asia.

Investigations hint at over 6.5 tons of cocaine processed by the group since 2021 to various European countries, including France, Belgium, Germany, Slovenia, and Spain.

During the operation, which encompassed actions in São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Santa Catarina, and Espírito Santo, 13 preventive arrests and 44 search-and-seizures were executed, with courts ordering the seizure of assets and freezing of property up to 1 billion reais (nearly $196 million). A shootout erupted in one of these locations, with a suspect dying of gunshot wounds as he resisted.

The group had links to the Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC) and Comando Vermelho (CV), two criminal organizations that the Trump Administration designated as Specially Designated Global Terrorists (SDGTs) and were previously targeted in Operation Exchange, which dismantled a $2 billion crypto money laundering ring earlier this month.

The police indicated that a luxury car dealership located in Greater São Paulo, which offered Ferrari, Porsche, Corvette, and Land Rover vehicles, was part of the operation that used shell companies to launder the drug trafficking proceeds using cryptocurrency.

The narrative

We have a new draft of the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, which merges the drafts advanced by the Senate Banking and Agriculture Committees. It also adds an ethics provision that would bar senior government officials from sponsoring or issuing their own cryptocurrencies in response to President Donald Trump.
The window for passage is tightening, and while a new draft is progress, the fact that we're still waiting to see if there's bipartisan agreement on a key provision means the timeline is getting very tight indeed.

While we have new text and it does have an ethics provision, the underlying dynamics of the debate don't seem to have changed very much. The key thing to note here is that while this is a crypto bill that will result in sweeping changes to how federal regulators and their jurisdictions are defined, the biggest outstanding issue doesn't really have a lot to do with that.

Democrats want a more binding ethics provision, one that will let them actually affect Trump and the $1.4 billion he made off crypto last year, while Trump and Republicans don't want that to happen.

POSCO International, South Korea's largest trading company, has begun tokenizing trade receivables on blockchain in a test that could speed up commercial payments between its global subsidiaries.

The company, which generated $22.2 billion in revenue last year from businesses spanning steel, energy and battery materials, is working with LG CNS, the technology arm of LG Group, to issue, transfer and settle receivables on layer-1 blockchain Injective INJ$4.9980, the firms told CoinDesk in a press briefing.

The pilot is using receivables generated by real trade between POSCO's overseas operations and their counterparties rather than simulated transactions.

Crypto markets are showing early signs of renewed strength, with bitcoin gaining while technology stocks declined, according to Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan.

In a July 22 market commentary, Hougan noted on X that bitcoin rose 9% since July 1 while the Nasdaq-100 fell 6%. He also pointed to improving sentiment and stronger ETF flows, while warning that the market has not received a confirmed bottom.

The executive believes the next crypto cycle will focus on the convergence of blockchain technology and traditional finance rather than another cycle driven mainly by speculation. He described:

“The next crypto bull market will be about stablecoins, tokenization, 24/7 trading, instant settlement, and institutional DeFi scaling to the trillions, disrupting finance the way the internet disrupted media and shopping in the early 2000s.”

The Bitwise CIO said blockchain infrastructure offers advantages including faster settlement, global access, and continuous markets. However, he noted that many investors remain focused on whether crypto has recovered instead of preparing for a broader shift in financial markets.

Earlier Bitcoin Outlook Focused on Institutional Demand

Hougan’s latest comments build on his previous view that institutional adoption will drive crypto’s next phase. He has argued that bitcoin ETF demand could tighten available supply as more investors gain exposure through traditional financial products.

The Bitwise executive has also pointed to broader market forces supporting a potential crypto recovery, including improving market structure, institutional participation, and growing demand from traditional investors through nine forces aligning for a crypto bull run.

Quantum computing is a risk factor for every encrypted system on the planet, including major banks. But crypto, due to the way it works, may be the technology that gets tested first.

"Cryptocurrencies are the canary in the coal mine," Eddy Zervigon, CEO of Quantum Xchange, said in an interview with CoinDesk. Zervigon's firm builds infrastructure to shield networks, including financial ones, from quantum-enabled attacks, and he's blunt about where the first casualty is likely to show up.

"That's the first place of attack because of the decentralized nature," Zervigon said. "Once you see it happening there, then you know that someone somewhere has a cryptographically relevant quantum computer."

A cryptographically relevant quantum computer, capable of breaking the elliptic-curve cryptography underpinning the Bitcoin blockchain's signatures, along with the encryption securing bank rails, doesn't exist yet. The consensus estimate for when it will is compressing, not stretching.

"The folks spending billions of dollars, like Microsoft, IBM, and others developing quantum computers, generally believe there will be a commercially relevant, cryptographically relevant quantum computer in the 2029 timeframe," Zervigon said. "That's not me making stuff up. That's based on what people like Arvind Krishna at IBM have said."

That estimate is consistent with recent hardware developments. Earlier this year, Google researchers revealed that breaking the elliptic-curve cryptography safeguarding top cryptocurrencies like bitcoin and ether would require fewer than 500,000 physical qubits, a 20-fold decline from previous estimates. That prompted several observers, including Google, to pull forward the so-called Q-Day deadline to 2029.
