March 12, 2026 marked a historic moment for Ethereum staking.

BlackRock, the world's largest asset management company, officially launched the iShares Staked Ethereum Trust (ticker symbol: ETHB) on Nasdaq—it not only holds Ethereum spot but also stakes a large portion of its assets on-chain and distributes the returns to investors regularly.

After more than a year of market discussion, the launch of ETHB essentially resolved a core issue that had remained unresolved since the introduction of Ethereum spot ETFs: Could ETH be formally accepted by the mainstream financial system as an "interest-bearing asset"?

This also signifies that "staking," once a behavior reserved for native on-chain users, has officially entered Wall Street's asset allocation framework.


I. What is ETHB and how does it work?

From the perspective of timing and market environment, the launch of BlackRock's ETHB was perfectly timed.

 On the one hand, BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) currently manages over $55 billion in assets, and the iShares Ethereum Trust (ETHA) manages $6.5 billion, demonstrating institutional acceptance of crypto asset ETFs. On the other hand, discussions and policy preparations regarding whether to allow ETFs to participate in staking have been ongoing for over a year, from the US to Hong Kong.

The biggest difference between ETHB and previous Ethereum spot ETFs like ETHA lies in its commitment to keeping ETH assets active.

Traditional crypto ETFs operate very simply: they typically buy ETH, hold it in custody, track price movements, and then do nothing. ETHB introduces a crucial change: allowing the held ETH assets to participate in network consensus and generate returns.

A Treasury Quietly Cut Down

In August 2023, a Wall Street Journal report based on reviewed financial documents revealed that SpaceX wrote down $373 million in Bitcoin value across 2021 and 2022 and had sold its cryptocurrency holdings, though the extent of the sale was not disclosed.

The disclosure sent Bitcoin briefly below $25,000 and triggered over $386 million in futures liquidations. SpaceX, as a private company, was never required to explain the sell-off publicly. The timing, reports noted, tracked closely with the collapse of major crypto firms including Terraform Labs and FTX.

That reduced stack is now heading into the spotlight. SpaceX is preparing for what could be the largest initial public offering in history — a listing that Bloomberg reported in late February could raise as much as $50 billion and push the company’s valuation to around $1.75 trillion. For context, Saudi Aramco’s 2026 debut raised $29 billion. A SpaceX listing would blow past that figure.
