Bitcoin Steady as Oil Spike and Middle East Tensions Rattle Markets

Bitcoin held modest gains during a broad market selloff as escalating tensions in the Middle East sent oil prices sharply higher and rattled global markets, according to a March 9 market update from crypto market maker Wintermute. The report noted that Brent crude jumped 26% during the conflict’s second week amid Strait of Hormuz supply fears, while bitcoin rose roughly 0.4% as equities, bonds, and gold fell.

The update followed U.S. efforts to escort and insure oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz after escalating military operations raised concerns about disruptions to one of the world’s most important energy routes. Roughly 20% of global oil supply normally passes through the strait, making it a critical chokepoint for energy markets. The firm said bitcoin held relatively steady while major equity benchmarks declined.

When it seems like sentiment is cooled down, Bitmine Immersion Technologies has doubled down on Ethereum, the second-largest cryptocurrency asset, again. In the highly volatile sector, the company continues to expand its digital asset holdings, with strategic ETH purchases.

The report from Milk Road, a market expert and investor, Bitmine has secured an additional 60,976 units of Ethereum valued at over $122 million despite ongoing turbulent market conditions. This strategic move during the period of uncertainty underscores the company’s long-term confidence in the network and its prospects.

During this period, Milk Road highlighted that people tend to see Bitimine’s $10 billion in paper losses and neglect what lies beneath the surface. The $10 billion in paper losses are the result of ETH’s 62% drop from its prior highs on average, and the position is strongly underwater at current prices. However, the business continues to purchase ETH and make actual money from the stack.

Bitmine currently holds over 4.53 million ETH, representing 3.76% of ETH’s entire supply in circulation. It is worth noting that over 3 million of its ETH holdings are locked away in staking contracts, and they don’t just sit idle.

With this massive staked ETH, the company currently earns approximately $174 million per year from the stack. Furthermore, this notable value is being generated and added to the company’s balance sheet annually, regardless of ETH’s price.

What This Means For Zcash
The round lands just months after the ECC team regrouped under a new name, and gives the Zcash-focused builder fresh capital to expand its wallet and protocol work without leaning on the network’s development fund.
Josh Swihart, who now leads ZODL after previously serving as CEO of ECC, framed the raise as a bet on product traction rather than a brand reset. “The name is new, but our team has been building Zcash for a decade,” he wrote. “A couple of years ago, my team and I set out to change the trajectory of Zcash with an uncompromising focus on the user experience for shielded ZEC. We released Zodl (then called Zashi) and have never looked back.”

That pitch is backed by a set of numbers the team clearly wants the market to notice. According to ZODL, its wallet has helped drive adoption of the Zcash shielded pool by more than 400% since launch, while facilitating over $600 million in ZEC swaps since October 2025. Swihart said the company first shipped what he called a “normie-friendly wallet,” then layered in integrations with Flexa for retail spending, Keystone for cold storage and, more recently, NEAR-powered intents for ZEC swaps.

Strategy has significantly expanded its digital asset treasury, acquiring 17,994 Bitcoin for approximately $1.28 billion.

Strategy has extended its relentless Bitcoin ($BTC) buying spree by purchasing an additional $1.28 billion worth of Bitcoin. This comes after Michael Saylor, the company's executive chairman, teased the purchase on Thursday.

According to a Form 8-K filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the corporate intelligence and software firm acquired 17,994 Bitcoin ($BTC) between March 2 and March 8. Its average purchasing price was $70,946 per $BTC.

With this latest purchase, Strategy's total aggregate Bitcoin holdings have reached a staggering 738,731 $BTC.

During the same March 2 to March 8 window, the company raised approximately $1.276 billion in net proceeds through the sale of both common and preferred stock.

Dogecoin volume up 87%

According to the report from Arkham Intelligence, the transfers were made in two separate transactions. The analyst says that the transfers do not necessarily indicate that Bitmine plans to sell its ETH holdings.

Major two transfers
The first transaction transferred 5300 ETH, which is valued at about $10.75 million, and the second transfer sent 4308 ETH, which is roughly around $8.74 million. Both transactions were routed through an intermediate wallet before reaching Coinbase Prime’s hot wallet, widely used by institutional investors.

The latest movement in crypto can sometimes suggest that the investors are preparing to sell, but that may not be the case here. With tools for trading, custody, and portfolio management, Coinbase Prime is primarily intended for institutional clients. Because of this, the transfer to Coinbase Prime may occur for many reasons; consequently, the transfer by itself does not verify any immediate selling activity.

Bitmine raised more than 4.5 million ETH from its total holdings last week by purchasing 60,976 ETH. Despite its substantial holdings, Bitmine’s cryptocurrency holdings are currently valued at roughly $2.25 billion, down from a peak of about $16 billion in October 2024. This decline is largely linked to the fall in the ether’s market price, and estimates suggest that Bitmine is currently holding unrealized losses of about $7.8 billion on its positions. Recent transfers have drawn attention towards the blockchain, and analysts say that they should be viewed within the broader context of the institutional crypto operations.
