Stakeholders from across the U.S., organized under Stand With Crypto, sent a letter to senators this week urging them to protect decentralized finance (DeFi) and preserve the ability of crypto exchanges to offer rewards on stablecoins.
The group’s state chapter presidents wrote, “We remain hopeful that this Congress will still pass clear and fair rules of the road for crypto — without incorporating provisions that undermine the development and adoption of cutting-edge financial technology.”
Stand With Crypto, supported by Coinbase, has a history of influencing elections, including significant sway in the 2024 cycle. In the past month, the group has also been active in state primaries, including Illinois, where it released an “Illinois Voter Guide” reflecting candidates’ positions on digital assets. Election day in Illinois is this Tuesday.
At the federal level, lawmakers in Washington are working to advance broader crypto legislation. The issue is currently with the Senate Banking Committee, which is expected to hold a hearing to amend and vote on the bill after prior delays.
A key point of debate is how to handle stablecoin rewards. The GENIUS Act, passed last July, prohibits stablecoin issuers from paying direct interest to holders but does not stop third-party platforms, like Coinbase, from offering rewards.
Banks argue that allowing such yields could drain deposits from traditional institutions and hurt community banks. Crypto firms counter that restricting rewards would stifle innovation, and that the topic was already debated during the GENIUS Act’s passage.
