According to Treasury, the targeted schemes systematically defrauded US businesses and generated nearly $800 million in 2024 for North Korea’s weapons programs. Secretary Scott Bessent described a model in which overseas operatives used fake identities and corporate deception to infiltrate legitimate companies, then turned sensitive access into a second layer of leverage. “Targets American companies through deceptive schemes.” “Treasury will continue to follow the money.”

That framing matters because the case was not presented as a conventional cybercrime story alone. Treasury and Chainalysis both pointed to a blended playbook: fraudulent hiring, wage extraction, financial facilitators, and crypto rails used to convert and move proceeds. Chainalysis called the operations “a sophisticated and growing threat.” It added, in equally direct terms, that “cryptocurrency plays a central role” in moving those funds back to North Korea while evading sanctions.

The clearest crypto-specific detail in the action concerned Nguyen Quang Viet, CEO of Vietnam-based Quangvietdnbg International Services Company Limited. Treasury said Nguyen converted about $2.5 million into cryptocurrency for North Koreans between mid-2023 and mid-2025, including illicit earnings tied to Amnokgang Technology Development Company, a DPRK IT company that manages overseas worker delegations. BlackRock will not launch complex or “exotic” forms of cryptocurrency exchange-traded funds as part of its digital asset investments. Robert Mitchnick, a BlackRock executive responsible for digital assets, revealed this information while participating in a discussion on CNBC’s Crypto World program. He stated that the company will adopt a cautious and disciplined approach to expanding its digital asset investments. He further stated that the company will keep a close eye on the demand for other forms of cryptocurrency ETFs before launching them under its iShares platform.

Mitchnick observed that the current interests from investors are mainly focused on investing in Bitcoin and Ether. These two are the most dominant digital currencies by market capitalization across the globe. He further clarified that other digital currencies are still generating some interest, though they are not yet mature enough to be included in large investment vehicles. Therefore, BlackRock continues to monitor the development and adoption of other digital currencies before introducing other ETFs. He said, “We continue to evaluate those as conditions evolve and as maturity, liquidity, scale and use cases develop, but we take a very discerning approach in terms of what we would put in an iShares ETF.”

Bitcoin's network has been running nonstop since 2009. The question nobody had rigorously answered until now is what it would actually take to break it.

Researchers at the Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance last week published the first longitudinal study of Bitcoin blockchain's resilience to physical infrastructure disruption, analyzing 11 years of peer-to-peer network data against 68 verified submarine cable fault events.

The headline finding is that between 72% and 92% of the world's inter-country submarine cables would need to fail simultaneously before Bitcoin experiences significant node disconnection.

In a world where the Strait of Hormuz is currently disrupted and infrastructure vulnerability is front of mind, the study provides the first empirical benchmark for how hard Bitcoin actually is to knock offline.

The numbers tell a story of a network that degrades gracefully rather than collapsing catastrophically. The researchers ran 1,000 Monte Carlo simulations per scenario across the full dataset and found that random cable failures barely register.

Over 87% of the 68 real-world cable fault events they studied caused less than 5% node impact. The largest single event, when seabed disturbances off Côte d'Ivoire damaged 7-8 cables simultaneously in March 2024, knocked out 43% of regional nodes but affected only 5-7 bitcoin nodes globally, roughly 0.03% of the network.

The correlation between cable failures and bitcoin's price was essentially zero, at -0.02. Infrastructure disruptions are invisible against daily price volatility.


But the paper's most important finding is the asymmetry between random and targeted attacks.
