Aave and CoW Swap publish dueling post-mortems after $50 million DeFi swap disaster
Aave and CoW Swap both published post-mortems on Saturday detailing the March 12 swap in which a user exchanged $50.4 million in aEthUSDT for roughly $36,000 worth of aEthAAVE.

Aave attributed the loss to an “illiquid market” and announced “Aave Shield,” a feature that automatically blocks swaps with price impact above 25%.

CoW Swap’s post-mortem told a more complicated story: a stale gas ceiling rejected better-priced quotes, the best-performing solver won two auctions but failed to execute either onchain, and evidence suggests the transaction leaked from a private mempool.
Aave and CoW Swap on Saturday published separate post-mortems on the March 12 swap in which a user converted over $50 million in aEthUSDT into roughly $36,000 worth of aEthAAVE through the CoW Swap-powered swap widget on the Aave interface. The incident is widely considered the largest execution loss of its kind in DeFi history.

The two accounts largely agree on the basic facts but diverge in emphasis and tone. Aave's analysis framed the loss primarily as a consequence of an "illiquid market," drawing a technical distinction between price impact and slippage. CoW Swap's post-mortem painted a more complex picture, identifying a chain of compounding infrastructure failures that made the final execution far worse than even the already-dire initial quotes suggested.

Bitcoin ($BTC) experienced a decline in the initial days of the US-Iran conflict, but subsequently made a significant recovery.

As Bitcoin surged above $73,000, altcoins mirrored $BTC’s gains. Ethereum (ETH) rose 6.9% to $2,240, XRP increased 3.8% to $1.47, and Solana (SOL) increased 6.5% to $93.2.

With Bitcoin expected to continue this recovery, a move above $80,000 is being considered.

Speaking to The Block, Bitrue research leader Andri Fauzan Adziima attributed Bitcoin’s recovery, nearing $74,000, to strong spot ETF inflows, short squeeze, and increasing institutional investor interest.

According to the data, there was a total net inflow of $767.3 million into spot Bitcoin ETFs over all five trading days last week.

Adziima noted that this rise in Bitcoin occurred despite the ongoing US-Iran conflict, which continues to fuel global uncertainty, and tensions surrounding the potential closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

This has revealed Bitcoin’s role as digital gold.

The analyst stated that Bitcoin is currently at a critical point, adding that there is a potential for a rise above $80,000.

“This recovery appears less like the definitive start of a prolonged bull rally and more like a solid rebound bounce from the lows around $60,000.”

The bull market needs sustainable momentum, but a price above $80,000 seems possible if entries continue.

At this point, the $70,000-$71,000 range will be an important support level for Bitcoin this week. A break above the $73,000-$74,000 region could lead to a rise towards $80,000.”

Zeus analyst Dominick John said that a clear break above $75,000 in Bitcoin is crucial for “the continuation of a stronger uptrend.”

According to analyst Pepe

Whale, $PEPE is consolidating near $0.0000042 after a prolonged decline and tight price compression. The chart shows declining volatility as the token trades within a narrow range. Key resistance sits between $0.0000048 and $0.0000050, which has rejected several breakout attempts.

Two hours ago, VenuV's THE was attacked with a classic Mango Markets-style price manipulation attack.

The attacker targeted the illiquid collateral THE:

· Collateralized THE

· Borrowed other assets

· Used the borrowed assets to buy more THE

· Pushed the price of THE higher

· Waited for the time-averaged oracle to update, obtained a higher collateral value, and then continued the cycle of borrowing and lending.


Due to THE's extremely poor on-chain liquidity, its price was artificially inflated from $0.27 to nearly $5. The oracle price subsequently updated to 0.5 (time-averaged), giving the attacker room to further amplify leverage.

More importantly, THE itself has a supply cap.

Normally, this would limit the attacker's ability to further increase their position. However, they bypassed this using a classic technique: a Compound fork donation attack.  In other words, after depositing a large amount of THE, the attacker directly transferred THE to the vTHE contract, using a "donation" method to further inflate the collateral value that could be detected by the system, thus exceeding the upper limit.

After the first wave of the attack, the price of THE stabilized around $0.5.

At this point, the attacker could have already left with the borrowed assets. However, he clearly wanted to maximize profits, so he continued to pour borrowed assets into buying THE, attempting another round of price manipulation.

The problem arose: although the price was abnormally high, market selling pressure also became extremely intense. The attacker continued to buy, but could no longer push the price up significantly. David Schwartz Provides Evidence That Burning XRP Escrow Would Have No Impact on Price

David Schwartz, Ripple’s CTO Emeritus (A CTO Emeritus is a former CTO who has attained an honorary position in the company due to his contributions), has provided evidence that Ripple burning all its escrowed XRP tokens would have no positive impact on the asset’s price. 

Ripple has sold over 21 billion XRP tokens since it began its escrow release schedule in 2017, triggering criticisms from detractors and some proponents. However, Ripple’s CTO Emeritus suggests one of the proposed solutions, involving an outright burn, may not have any positive economic impact.

Key Points

After receiving 80 billion XRP tokens from the XRPL architects, Ripple locked up 55 billion tokens in escrow in 2017 and has sold 21.4 billion since then.

These sales, which often involve about 200 million XRP from escrow monthly, have raised concerns, leading to criticisms.

Some of these critics have argued that Ripple could burn all escrowed tokens to trigger a bump in XRP’s price.

Amid these suggestions, Ripple’s former CTO and CTO Emeritus David Schwartz has come up to debunk claims that such burns could positively impact XRP’s price.

He cited Stellar’s earlier burn of half its supply, exactly 55 billion tokens, in 2019 as evidence that such events would not trigger the expected price rally.
