Crypto isn't the problem with the US economy, says senator
Cody Carbone, CEO of the cryptocurrency advocacy group The Digital Chamber, received a largely muted response to his testimony at a Senate Banking Committee hearing on affordability.

In a Tuesday hearing titled The Affordability Agenda, Carbone said that the digital asset industry could help solve affordability problems in the United States, including through faster and cheaper transactions, putting “competitive pressure” on existing payment systems, and reducing barriers to “owning and transferring assets.”

However, the majority of lawmakers present did not question Carbone directly or inquire about digital assets, with the exception of Indiana Senator Tim Banks and Louisiana Senator John Kennedy. Banks asked the Digital Chamber CEO about the costs related to foreign remittances compared to US dollar-pegged stablecoins, while Kennedy largely dismissed Carbone’s testimony.

“Mr. Carbone, you seem to be here to promote cryptocurrency,” said Kennedy. “I love cryptocurrency, but I don't think that's the problem with our economy.”

Carbone’s remarks centered around the US Senate moving forward on the Digital Asset Market Clarity (CLARITY) Act, which the banking committee advanced in May. The full chamber is expected to vote on the legislation in a matter of weeks, but many lawmakers are calling for additional ethics provisions, potentially complicating passage in the Senate.

eyes crypto perpetuals as Kalshi upends futures marketCBOE has begun evaluating a conversion of its Bitcoin and Ether futures into perpetual contracts after crypto perpetuals generated more than $8.5 billion in trading volume on Kalshi within weeks of launch.

According to a June 23 report from The Wall Street Journal, CBOE Global Markets is considering turning its continuous Bitcoin and Ether futures into perpetual futures following recent regulatory developments in the United States.

The report cited Rob Hocking, CBOE's global head of derivatives, who said the exchange is exploring the possibility after the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission approved cryptocurrency perpetual futures for prediction market operator Kalshi.

While Hocking did not provide a timeline for any changes, the comments place one of the largest U.S. exchange operators among a growing list of firms responding to fresh competition in the perpetual futures market.

CBOE introduced its continuous Bitcoin and Ether futures contracts in December, offering products with expirations extending as far as 10 years.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the exchange is now studying whether perpetual contracts could provide an alternative structure following the CFTC's decision to permit similar products on regulated U.S. venues.

Ethereum's $38 billion decentralized finance (DeFi) TVL represents a 53% market share, signaling institutional investors' preference. Additionally, when including its layer-2 scaling solutions, the Ethereum ecosystem accounts for 43% of decentralized exchange (DEX) volumes. However, Ethereum faces criticism for relatively low 30-day fees of $11 million.

Despite controlled $ETH issuance at 0.8% equivalent annual inflation, the staking reward rate was 2.7%, lower than the US money market yield. Adding to investors' concerns, the publicly listed company BitMine (BMNR US) held $9.3 billion in unrealized losses on its $ETH reserves. The company, led by its Chairman Tom Lee, continues to increase its position.

Even though there is no imminent risk of BitMine being forced to reduce its $ETH holdings, the situation likely deters institutional investors' appetite. More concerningly, US-listed Ether spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs) posted net outflows for six consecutive weeks.
