Bitcoin traders ran out of excuses for the market’s flatline – and now a $2.5 billion bet is running out of time


Traders spent most of July with a pretty good explanation for why Bitcoin wouldn't move. A dense cluster of options contracts had the price boxed in, they argued, because the dealers who sold those contracts were buying every dip and selling every rally to keep their own books balanced. Clear the contracts away, and Bitcoin would finally be free to go somewhere.

The contracts have now cleared on two consecutive Fridays, and Bitcoin is sitting roughly where it started. It traded just under $64,000 on Saturday, closing out a week in which it failed to hold $66,000 and then slid back through the level that positioning was supposed to defend. The pretty good explanation has run out of road, and what's left is pretty boring: demand for Bitcoin is thin right now, and it's thin on both sides of the market.

4 Things That May Move Crypto Markets This Week as Fed Rate Hike Odds IncreaseCrypto markets have ticked up this Monday morning as investors brace for a volatile week ahead, with all eyes on the US central bank. Meanwhile, Iran said it will halt its attacks as long as the United States does the same, a senior Iranian official told Reuters on Sunday.

The US paused its bombing campaign on Friday following 13 nights of intensifying airstrikes. The development has caused a dip in oil prices and a jump in US stock futures and crypto markets.July’s Consumer Confidence data is due on Tuesday, which reflects how consumers are spending. This is followed by the week’s big event on Wednesday when the Fed announces its rate decision and Fed Chair Kevin Warsh holds a press conference, setting policy direction.

The meeting comes amid growing uncertainty about tech sector valuations, AI infrastructure spending, and economic growth trajectory amid a backdrop of inflationary pressures.

The market “feels very frothy,” Kristina Hooper, chief market strategist at Man Group, told Reuters. “Investors are, to a certain extent, walking on eggshells, and they’re more likely to react negatively to any signs of imperfection.”Odds of rates remaining the same have fallen to 63.7% on the CME Fed watch tool, which now predicts a 36.3% chance of an increase.

July’s PCE inflation data is due on Thursday, followed by the Michigan Consumer Sentiment data and Inflation Expectations data on Friday.

According to the Coinbase CEO, cryptocurrency technology is a kind of general-purpose infrastructure, like electricity or the internet, and will be one of the fundamental tools for Al systems to conduct financial transactions in the future.

Armstrong argued that the need for digital assets will increase, especially with the proliferation of autonomous Al agents, and stated that current financial systems are not fully adaptable to this new technology.

Armstrong stated that Al agents cannot open bank accounts or wait for international money transfers to be completed, therefore cryptocurrencies offer a significant advantage as a real-time and programmable payment system.

Quantum computing is a risk factor for every encrypted system on the planet, including major banks. But crypto, due to the way it works, may be the technology that gets tested first.

"Cryptocurrencies are the canary in the coal mine," Eddy Zervigon, CEO of Quantum Xchange, said in an interview with CoinDesk. Zervigon's firm builds infrastructure to shield networks, including financial ones, from quantum-enabled attacks, and he's blunt about where the first casualty is likely to show up.

"That's the first place of attack because of the decentralized nature," Zervigon said. "Once you see it happening there, then you know that someone somewhere has a cryptographically relevant quantum computer."
