Resolv's USR stablecoin depegs after attacker mints 80 million unbacked tokens, extracts roughly $25 million

An attacker exploited a flaw in Resolv’s USR minting contract, creating ~80 million unbacked tokens from roughly $200,000 in USDC.

USR crashed to $0.025 on Curve before recovering to around $0.85. The RESOLV governance token fell roughly 9%.

The attacker used the stablecoins to purchase 11,409 ETH worth about $23.7 million at current prices, and holds $1.1 million worth of wrapped USR in another address. 

Analysts traced the flaw to a privileged minting role controlled by a single externally owned account with no mint limits or oracle checks.

In a statement on X, Resolv Labs said it had paused all protocol functions and that its collateral pool “remains fully intact” with “no underlying assets” lost.

An attacker exploited a vulnerability in Resolv's USR stablecoin minting contract on Sunday, creating approximately 80 million unbacked tokens and extracting roughly $25 million, according to multiple blockchain security firms.

The attack began around 2:21 a.m. UTC. The X account YieldsAndMore was the first to flag the incident, posting Etherscan transaction data showing that the attacker deposited 100,000 USDC into Resolv's USR Counter contract and received 50 million USR in return, roughly 500 times the expected amount. A second transaction minted an additional 30 million USR.

USR is a dollar-pegged stablecoin that uses a delta-neutral hedging strategy backed by ETH and BTC rather than fiat reserves. The token dropped to $0.025 on its most liquid Curve Finance pool within 17 minutes of the first mint, per DEX Screener. It later recovered to around $0.85 but had not restored its peg as of Sunday morning.

Strive (ASST) Chief Risk Officer Jeff Walton laid out the bull case for what he called “Digital Credit,” arguing that a single shift in how rating agencies value Bitcoin ($BTC) could catapult Strategy (MSTR) from junk status to investment grade.

In his remarks, Walton targeted the gap between how credit agencies score Bitcoin treasury companies and the capital they could unlock.

Bitcoin Valued at Zero on the Balance Sheet

The dominant US credit rating framework, led by S&P Global, assigns $BTC a value of exactly zero on corporate balance sheets. Every dollar of dividend and debt-service capacity must be justified as if the holdings do not exist.

S&P gave MicroStrategy a B- issuer credit rating in October 2025, reaffirmed in December with a stable outlook.

The agency cited high Bitcoin concentration, narrow business focus, and low dollar liquidity. Strategy holds over 761,000 $BTC worth roughly $53 billion as of this writing.

Walton argued that if agencies begin underwriting $BTC at any value above zero, MicroStrategy’s rating should elevate to investment grade (IG) territory.

River surged more than 20% yesterday to $31.38, ranked among the top-100 daily gainers across crypto, then gave back most of those gains this morning. It now trades at $25.857, down 11.93%. That kind of two-day move, up 20% then down 12%, is typical for a mid-cap token with thin circulating supply and momentum-driven volume. The chart is now at a decision point.

Daily Chart: Inverse Head And Shoulders Points To $40

The daily chart shows a clear inverse head and shoulders pattern forming since the February lows. The left shoulder formed around $20, the head dipped to roughly $8 to $10 in the February flush, and the right shoulder has been building since mid-March. Price has now broken above the neckline near $25 to $26, which is the classical entry signal for the pattern.

The measured move from an inverse head and shoulders takes the depth of the head and projects it upward from the neckline. That puts the target in the $40 to $45 range. RSI at 59.61 has room to run before hitting overbought. The 20-day EMA at $21.24 is rising and provides solid support on any pullback from here.

Key levels:

Neckline support: $25 to $26

Pattern target: $40 to $45

Key resistance: $30 to $32

30-Minute Chart: Rising Channel Breaks As SAR Turns Bearish

The 30-minute chart shows a rising channel from March 20 lows near $18 that carried $RIVER all the way to $31 before reversing. Price has now broken below the channel lower boundary near $26, with the SAR flipping bearish at $29.892 and the Supertrend resistance sitting at $29.623 overhead.

The break below the channel is a short-term warning. It does not kill the daily inverse head and shoulders setup, but it does mean buyers need to step in quickly near $25 to keep the neckline intact.
