Why two public companies quietly liquidated 511 Bitcoin in 24 hours to escape $31.7 million in debt

KULR Technology Group, a US-listed battery technology company, and The Smarter Web Company, a UK-listed web services group with a Bitcoin treasury strategy, have sold approximately 511 BTC and used the proceeds to retire approximately $31.7 million of obligations in disclosures published one day apart.

The total comprises $20 million of KULR principal and Smarter Web's exact $11,698,540 repayment. Both companies acted voluntarily and retained substantial Bitcoin reserves; neither disclosure described a lender-forced liquidation. The shared consequence is that financing can turn assets presented as long-term holdings into repayment inventory without ending a treasury strategy.

KULR's July 24 filing said it sold approximately 333 BTC from July 9 through July 23 at a weighted-average price of approximately $64,538, generating about $21.5 million in gross proceeds. It used the net proceeds to clear all principal under its $20 million Coinbase Credit facility. Accrued interest still had to be calculated at month-end and was expected to be paid in August 2026.

KULR said the sale was a deliberate step to reduce interest expense and remove collateral and liquidation risk. An earlier quarterly filing showed a March $5 million draw with a 7% loan fee and a May $15 million draw carrying a 7% yearly financing charge paid monthly. KULR expected 565 pledged BTC to be released and reported approximately 760 BTC still in its treasury.

Crypto markets are showing early signs of renewed strength, with bitcoin gaining while technology stocks declined, according to Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan.

In a July 22 market commentary, Hougan noted on X that bitcoin rose 9% since July 1 while the Nasdaq-100 fell 6%. He also pointed to improving sentiment and stronger ETF flows, while warning that the market has not received a confirmed bottom.

The executive believes the next crypto cycle will focus on the convergence of blockchain technology and traditional finance rather than another cycle driven mainly by speculation. He described:

“The next crypto bull market will be about stablecoins, tokenization, 24/7 trading, instant settlement, and institutional DeFi scaling to the trillions, disrupting finance the way the internet disrupted media and shopping in the early 2000s.”

The Bitwise CIO said blockchain infrastructure offers advantages including faster settlement, global access, and continuous markets. However, he noted that many investors remain focused on whether crypto has recovered instead of preparing for a broader shift in financial markets.

Hougan’s latest comments build on his previous view that institutional adoption will drive crypto’s next phase. He has argued that bitcoin ETF demand could tighten available supply as more investors gain exposure through traditional financial products.

The Bitwise executive has also pointed to broader market forces supporting a potential crypto recovery, including improving market structure, institutional participation, and growing demand from traditional investors through nine forces aligning for a crypto bull run.

He has also argued that geopolitical uncertainty could increase bitcoin’s appeal as a global asset, outlining how geopolitical chaos could push bitcoin higher as investors seek alternatives to traditional financial systems.

Bitcoin is currently going through one of its most uncertain phases since its inception in 2009. As geopolitical issues, profit-taking, and changing investor sentiment continue to weigh in on the cryptocurrency, the community remains uncertain about the potential future of $BTC. While many believe that the current bearish sentiment may continue, others remain optimistic that the Bitcoin price is poised for another major bull run.

As of press time, $BTC crypto is trading at $64,060. This price represents one of the lowest levels over the past year. Crypto is the canary in the coal mine for the

quantum computing threat, experts say Quantum computing is a risk factor for every encrypted system on the planet, including major banks. But crypto, due to the way it works, may be the technology that gets tested first.

"Cryptocurrencies are the canary in the coal mine," Eddy Zervigon, CEO of Quantum Xchange, said in an interview with CoinDesk. Zervigon's firm builds infrastructure to shield networks, including financial ones, from quantum-enabled attacks, and he's blunt about where the first casualty is likely to show up.

"That's the first place of attack because of the decentralized nature," Zervigon said. "Once you see it happening there, then you know that someone somewhere has a cryptographically relevant quantum computer."

A cryptographically relevant quantum computer, capable of breaking the elliptic-curve cryptography underpinning the Bitcoin blockchain's signatures, along with the encryption securing bank rails, doesn't exist yet. The consensus estimate for when it will is compressing, not stretching.

"The folks spending billions of dollars, like Microsoft, IBM, and others developing quantum computers, generally believe there will be a commercially relevant, cryptographically relevant quantum computer in the 2029 timeframe," Zervigon said. "That's not me making stuff up. That's based on what people like Arvind Krishna at IBM have said."
