According to the latest Q2 results from MARA and Riot, Coinpedia reports that the Bitcoin mining industry will continue to face pressure in 2026. The two companies sold a combined 32,758 BTC in the first half of the year. Meanwhile, network difficulty has significantly decreased since the beginning of the year, and mining companies are increasingly shifting funds towards power, data centers, and AI-related businesses.

Difficulty and Hashrate Decline Simultaneously

Hashrate Index data shows that Bitcoin difficulty has been adjusted downwards 10 times and upwards only 7 times in 2026. After the most recent adjustment on August 23, the difficulty dropped to 125.81 trillion, a 15.1% decrease from approximately 148.25 trillion on January 1, and also 19.1% lower than the peak of 156 trillion reached in November 2025.

Hashrate is also declining.  According to the article, the Bitcoin network's current hashrate is approximately 855 to 928 EH/s, about 25% lower than the peak of 1.23 ZH/s in October 2025. This means that over 300 EH/s of effective hashrate has left the network in the past period. The article states that even with the Bitcoin price rebound in August, the hashrate has not significantly recovered.


MARA Sold Over 23,000 BTC in the First Half of the Year

MARA released its second-quarter results on August 6th. The company's second-quarter operating hashrate increased by 22% year-over-year to 70.3 EH/s, producing 2,422 BTC in the quarter, higher than the 2,247 BTC in the first quarter. The daily cost per unit hashrate improved by 4% to $27.7.


However, the improved operations failed to offset the impact of the falling Bitcoin price. The figures have risen across the dated snapshots available. CryptoSlate’s Aug. 17 GovTool snapshot showed 32.46% DRep support and 1.95% SPO support. Intersect placed the vote at 37.9% and 7.93%, respectively, as of Aug. 21 at 20:00 UTC.

The dated readings show support rising. Exact point-to-point arithmetic remains inappropriate because the Aug. 17 baseline came from GovTool and the latest reading came from CardanoScan. Cardano’s governance system uses role-specific active-stake calculations, leaving the two displays best understood as separate measurements.

Even on CardanoScan’s latest basis, the remaining gaps were substantial: 25.3 percentage points for DReps and 39.0 points for SPOs. Votes and stake distributions can still change before expiry, so passage remains possible. The size of the deficits and the short deadline leave the outcome highly uncertain.
