Bitcoin’s security-budget debate usually starts with one total: how much miners collect in transaction fees as the block subsidy shrinks.

A July 2026 NBER working paper by Fabian Schär, Dario Thürkauf, and David Yermack points to a second variable. Using data from 2017 through 2025, the authors report that larger fee differences between adjacent Bitcoin blocks are associated with more competing blocks at the same height and a longer wait for the next block.

The evidence is observational and identifies a network-level relationship, while miner intent and the cause of any individual block race remain unresolved. The finding still gives wallets, miners, and users a measurable signal: Bitcoin security incentives respond to how fees arrive from block to block, as well as how much the network pays over time.

Fee gaps create a different mining incentive

Bitcoin currently pays miners a fixed subsidy of 3.125 $BTC for each block, plus the transaction fees included in that block. Successive subsidy reductions place more long-run weight on fees as a source of mining revenue.

As of Aug. 26, a daily Glassnode measure put transaction fees at about 0.70% of miner revenue. A $BTC.network report covering Aug. 14 through Aug. 21 calculated a 0.67% share for the week. The two snapshots cover different periods, but each places fees below 1%.

Block-level data can show much sharper variation than those aggregate readings. An Aug. 26 Blockchain.com block snapshot showed 0.0077 $BTC in fees in block 964,120 and 0.0536 $BTC in block 964,121, an almost seven-fold change between adjacent blocks. The comparison illustrates how sharply fee rewards can vary from one block to the next, while the fee values alone leave miner behavior unresolved.

Total quarterly revenue of $96.2 billion beat consensus forecasts for $92.27 billion. Data center revenue was $89 billion versus estimates for $85.4 billion.

Earnings per share of $2.22 beat estimates for $2.09.

“AI has reached its inflection point,” said CEO Jensen Huang. “Now compute is revenue … And demand is accelerating.”

Third-quarter revenue guidance was $108 billion versus Street forecasts for $103.9 billion. The $100 billion level has some significance as only nine companies in the S&P 500 have previously reported $100 billion or more in quarterly revenue.

Gross margin next quarter was guided to 74%, ticking down from 75% seen in the second quarter.

The downside came after the July print of the US Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE), known as the Federal Resrve’s “preferred” inflation gauge, hit 3.7% year-on-year, above the anticipated 3.6%.

“From the preceding month, the PCE price index for July increased 0.2%. Excluding food and energy, the PCE price index also increased 0.2 %,” the Bureau of Economic Analysis’ (BEA) official release confirmed.

Markets appeared disappointed by the results following June’s unexpected drop in PCE gains, which included their first month-on-month decrease in six years.

“US inflation continues to run at nearly double the Fed’s 2.0% target,” trading resource The Kobeissi Letter responded in a post on X.

The PCE numbers come a day before the Fed’s annual Jackson Hole economic symposium, with chair Kevin Warsh due to make the keynote speech on Friday.

SEC resurrecting U.S. crypto custody rule the previous administration failed to landLast time the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) tried to tighten the regulatory leash on where its investment advisers could hold client crypto assets, it didn't go well.

But the agency is giving the regulation of crypto safeguarding another shot, hoping to answer the industry's urgent questions about how to comply with the existing custody regulations for crypto assets. The SEC took the very preliminary step of sending the concept this week to the White House Office of Budget and Management, where it'll sit for a while under review before the agency can move forward to actually propose it.

The SEC said that its future effort "would improve and modernize the regulations around custody of investment adviser client assets and fund assets, including to address crypto assets," according to its current description on the agency's public regulatory agenda.

Apart from clarifying the situation for a rapidly growing market, the pending proposal would "remove burdens from certain outdated provisions that are no longer needed to provide investor protection given the evolution in the markets and security trading and holding practices."

The language isn't helpful in providing the contours of what this might look like, though the tone suggests an agency that will stick to its path of making crypto business easier to conduct in the U.S.

But it's been a perilous topic in the past.

When announcing the agency's previous custody proposal in 2023, then-Chair Gary Gensler fired a warning shot across the crypto sector. "Make no mistake: Based upon how crypto platforms generally operate, investment advisers cannot rely on them as qualified custodians," he'd said of the proposed expansion of the agency's custody regulations.
