Oil’s Great Divide: Iran War Splits Global Energy Market Into 2 Worlds


Three weeks into the Iran conflict, global oil markets have fractured along geographic lines. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude sits near $97 per barrel while physical crude in Oman trades at a record $167.

The gap between US and international benchmarks has widened to levels not seen in over a decade. The split reflects a deeper structural divide between a relatively self-sufficient American energy market and a world scrambling for supply.

A $70 Barrel Gap With No Precedent

The Brent-WTI spread blew out to roughly $18 per barrel on March 19, its widest level since the mid-2010s. But that figure understates the dislocation in physical markets. Oman crude trades near $167, Dubai at $137, and Brent at $113, while WTI remains below $100.

That divergence has no modern parallel. When the Iran conflict began on February 28, US oil initially surged toward $120 per barrel. However, as the Strait of Hormuz closed and roughly 18% of global crude supply went offline, international benchmarks broke away.

“This could increase tension between the U.S. and its European allies who are suffering a greater consequence when it comes to energy prices,” warned goldbug Peter Schiff.

The US gets less than 8% of its oil from the Persian Gulf, roughly 500,000 barrels per day. That figure has fallen sharply from 2 million barrels per day just 9 years ago.

Domestic production near 13.7 million barrels per day and a shift to net exporter status have created a buffer that no other major economy enjoys.

The March 2026 joint framework from the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission represents the most significant regulatory development in U.S. crypto history. While most of my peers see this as "good", I view this moment with cautious optimism.

Within a 24-hour period, more than 1.1 billion DOGE had been committed to the futures market, a trend that is beginning to show on rival platforms. The Dogecoin price outlook is notably at a make-or-break level, with inconsistencies in open interest and whale action, making the $0.10 level a major one to watch. The DOGE price has broken this level as a key resistance zone many times in the past week; however, failure to flip it as a support signals market weakness. Retail is Pouring $70 Billion Into Gold ETFs, While Institutions Are Selling

Retail investors are pouring capital into gold and silver Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs). The buying spree comes as institutions move in the opposite direction.

The Kobeissi Letter highlighted that gold ETFs have seen over $70 billion in retail purchases since Q2 2025. Investors have tripled their purchase pace over the past six months.

Furthermore, over the past year, retail investors have bought over $10 billion in silver ETFs.

"Retail investors are all-in on precious metals," the post read.

However, there is a clear gap between retail and institutional positioning. The Kobeissi Letter added that while retail was buying, institutional investors sold $1 billion in gold and $200 million in silver.

In addition, institutional outflows from gold accelerated after the precious metal's price declines 20% in just 3 days in Januray.

After their divorce, a husband has accused his ex-wife of plotting to steal Bitcoin worth millions and luxury watches in a case that's set to test how digital assets are treated by English civil courts.

Ping Fai Yuen sued Fun Yung Li in a London court after he discovered that she had stolen Bitcoin from his wallet and moved the digital assets out of his reach. The more than 2,323 Bitcoin has been worth as much as 180 million pounds ($238 million) since the litigation began, according to a London court ruling published on March 10.

Yuen alleges that his ex-wife worked with a hacker to obtain a password to crack open the so-called cold wallet and then move the cryptocurrency to herself. Tipped off by his daughter, Yuen secretly recorded his ex-wife speaking with an unidentified caller about how to navigate money laundering checks, his lawyers said, according to the ruling. 

"You claim that your money was Bitcoin, such large amount, so many questions, how are you going to explain about it," the unidentified person said in conversation with Li, according to the court ruling. "Such large amount even 10 banks, which it's not enough to put them into, you cannot explain how you obtain such large amount of money."

Li, who now lives in Hong Kong, has denied all involvement and provided the court with a one sentence affidavit. 

"It was essentially a one sentence response confirming that she was "unaware of any information required to be provided in response to the matters..." In my judgement it can be properly described as a bare denial of any involvement in the matters alleged in the straightforward factual claim as presented," the judge wrote in the ruling.

Lawyers for both Yuen and Li didn't respond to requests for comment. 

When Yuen discovered that his Bitcoin had been stolen, he confronted his ex-wife and assaulted her, the judge wrote in the ruling. He was eventually arrested and pleaded guilty in 2024 to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and two offences of

Stablecoin Payments Firm TransFi Raises $19 Million to Fuel Global Expansion
TransFi, a company specializing in stablecoin-powered cross-border payments, has raised $19.2 million to accelerate its growth in emerging markets. The funding includes $14.2 million in Series A equity and a $5 million liquidity facility, led by Turing Financial Group.
The firm plans to use the funds to expand across Southeast Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, and Africa. In addition, TransFi aims to secure further regulatory licenses and grow its enterprise merchant network.
Positioning itself as an alternative to traditional banking and SWIFT-based systems, TransFi uses stablecoins to facilitate faster, more efficient cross-border transactions. Its platform supports global payroll, remittances, treasury management, and payouts.
“Stablecoins are no longer theoretical instruments; they are becoming foundational infrastructure for global commerce,” said Raj Kamal, co-founder and CEO of TransFi. “This Series A allows us to scale our infrastructure in high-friction markets and show that stablecoin-enabled payments are not just the future—they’re happening now.”
TransFi is on track to process roughly $5 billion in transactions in fiscal year 2026. Since its 2024 seed round, the company’s revenue has grown sixteen-fold, now serving over 2 million users worldwide.

US Senators Urge Swift Action on Bitcoin, Crypto Market Structure Bill
U.S. Senators are pressing lawmakers to advance legislation aimed at clarifying Bitcoin and broader crypto market structure.

Sen. Cynthia Lummis emphasized urgency in remarks today at the D.C. Blockchain Summit today, saying, “This may be our only chance to get market structure done. I can’t be any clearer: The time for clarity is now.” 

She confirmed that the Banking Committee plans to mark up the bill in April, after the Easter recess.

“We really are going to get it out of the Banking Committee in April,” she added.

Lummis also addressed a potential compromise on stablecoin yield, hinted at by Sen. Tim Scott yesterday. “We think we’ve got it,” she said, though she acknowledged she has not seen the negotiated language herself. 

She noted banks remain cautious: “We’ve got to get the banks to swallow hard…. Gosh the banks got really dug in on this. But they’re gonna get there.”

Sen. Kevin Cramer echoed the call for speed yesterday, warning that “time is not our friend” and urging passage of market structure legislation before Easter. 

The White House’s Patrick Witt is expected to provide further updates on the bill’s progress later today.
