Bitcoin Open Interest Collapses to 12%. Is the Short Squeeze Over?

Crypto-margined Bitcoin futures now make up about 12% of open interest, down from nearly 100% around 2019–2020.

Bitcoin rebounded from around $57,000 to a weekly close near $79,175, today up about 1.88%.

In the past 24 hours, $570.08 million in positions were liquidated, with shorts hit harder than longs.

Bitcoin futures traders have all but abandoned crypto as collateral. The share of Bitcoin open interest that is crypto-margined—positions backed by Bitcoin itself rather than a stablecoin—is now about 12% across all exchanges, according to Glassnode's long-run metric.

That's a long way from where it sat in 2019 and 2020, when crypto-margined contracts made up close to 100% of the market. For most of the last decade, if you opened a $BTC futures position, your margin was almost always denominated in $BTC.

A crypto-margined position is collateralized in the asset you're trading, so a price drop shrinks your buffer at the exact moment the trade is going against you—a feedback loop that can trigger a margin call just as the market is moving fastest. Stablecoin-margined positions, by contrast, sit in dollars, so the collateral keeps its value while the trade swings.

Traders have simply chosen the steadier float.
The move toward stablecoins mirrors how the broader derivatives market has matured. Coinbase opened U.K. derivatives trading through Hyperliquid with up to 50x leverage this month, Bitcoin ETFs drew $854 million over five days as rate-hike bets faded, and Strategy trimmed its own Bitcoin stack—all signs of institutional flow that tends to settle in dollars, not coins.

None of this cooled spot demand this week. Bitcoin rebounded from around $57,000 to a weekly close near $79,175, up about 1.88% today after months of low-volatility drift between $60,000

Crypto greed gauge hits highest since just before October’s $19 billion wipeout

Crypto traders have swung from fear to greed in less than a fortnight.

The widely watched Crypto Fear & Greed Index reached 74 on Tuesday, up from 27 on Aug. 12, before easing to 65 on Wednesday. It spent every day from late July through Aug. 19 in fear territory, dipping to 25 on Aug. 6, which the index classifies as “extreme fear.”

The gauge scores market mood from zero to 100 by blending bitcoin's volatility and trading momentum — which carry most of the weight — with social media activity, bitcoin's share of total crypto value and Google search interest. Anything above 50 counts as greed.

As such, it measures what traders are doing now rather than forecasting what happens next.

Data shows the index last sat this high on Oct. 5, 2025, five days before the crash that forced roughly $19 billion of leveraged positions to close in a single session, still the largest such event on record.

The shift in sentiment has come with gains across the market. Bitcoin climbed from below $68,000 last week to nearly $80,000, while some major tokens added as much as 70% as traders turned back toward the so-called debasement trade after months in which speculative attention had been dominated by AI, memory chips and semiconductor stocks.

Further down the market the moves are larger still. Dogecoin has gained about 24% over the past week. Smaller memecoins have run far harder, with Thinking Cat up 131% over seven days, Cash Cat 113% and Dog (Bitcoin) close to doubling.

Money moving into thinly traded tokens like these is a strong indication of risk appetite returning, and such high readings can indicate investors are getting carried away and that the market may be due a correction.

The next test comes Friday, when Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh delivers his first Jackson Hole keynote as chair. Markets are looking for clues on rates and inflation after weeks of volatility in long-term Treasury

Context matters before anyone gets excited. XRP price traded above $3.60 last August and spent the following twelve months in near-continuous decline.

October cracked $2.40 in a single session. February 2026 saw the price flush to $1.13, and the months after that offered only a listless range of roughly $1.30 to $1.55.

June broke lower again. XRP price then flatlined at $1.00 through July and most of August, barely moving for weeks. Last week ended that. The price spiked to $1.68 before sellers immediately stepped in.Now comes the giveback. XRP closed at $1.47614, down $0.04433 for a loss of 2.92%, with a session range from $1.45326 to $1.53000.

That is the first red candle since the breakout. Resistance sits at $1.53000, then the $1.68 spike high, then the $1.80 shelf from December.

Support runs through $1.45326 and $1.30, with $1.00 as the structural base.

The RSI panel is not loaded on this chart, so momentum reads from price action alone. A vertical run of roughly 68%, followed by a 2.92% pullback, indicates healthy digestion rather than rejection.

The tell is where XRP price stops. Holding above $1.40 keeps the breakout structure intact and leaves the path toward $2.50 open.

Avalanche Price Today: Inside the Current Setup
According to CoinGabbar analyst desk After surging out of a multi-month ascending channel, $AVAX ran into resistance and pulled back inside the same structure it had escaped. 

The token is currently holding above the channel's midline support, a zone that has acted as a springboard during previous pullbacks. 

Momentum has cooled from its recent highs, but the broader channel remains intact, and each fresh test of the upper trendline is being watched closely by traders following the $AVAX price prediction narrative.

AVAX Chart Structure: Levels Traders Are Watching
According to TradingView, if AVAX manages to close back above the channel's upper trendline and hold that level, chart watchers see the move opening the door toward $8.3592, followed by $9.5504, and further out, $10.4786.tradingview chart for avalanche avax

A rejection at the same zone would instead point the token back toward the channel's built-in support levels at $6.7658, $6.2088, and $5.6829, with the lowest of the three aligning closely with the channel's base.

The Relative Strength Index (RSI) on the daily timeframe is reading 61.15, positioned above
