Market Updates: Iran Considers Bitcoin Fees for Oil Tankers, Morgan Stanley Launches Spot BTC ETF, Ethereum Foundation Sells 416 ETH
Iran is exploring a plan to charge oil tankers transit fees in Bitcoin as they pass through the Strait of Hormuz, according to the Financial Times. The proposal is linked to a temporary two-week ceasefire with the United States, with officials suggesting the system could help monitor shipments and prevent misuse of the truce.

Hamid Hosseini, spokesperson for Iran’s Oil, Gas and Petrochemical Products Exporters’ Union, noted that only fully loaded vessels would be subject to the fee. Tankers would need to submit cargo details via email in advance for approval.
The toll is expected to be set at $1 per barrel, with payments settled in digital assets based on official instructions.

As geopolitical actors experiment with crypto utility, traditional finance continues accelerating its adoption. Morgan Stanley has launched its own spot Bitcoin ETF, a significant milestone for Wall Street.

The Morgan Stanley Bitcoin Trust (MSBT), now listed on NYSE Arca, directly holds Bitcoin instead of relying on derivatives. This structure aligns with growing investor preference for physically backed products.

With a 0.14% annual fee, the fund is now the lowest-cost option in its category. Custody will be handled by Bank of New York Mellon and Coinbase Custody Trust Company.

The launch positions Morgan Stanley as the first major U.S. bank to bring a spot Bitcoin ETF to market under its own name.

Sentiment in the Bitcoin (BTC) market appears to have shifted after a prolonged period of stagnation, suggesting investors are preparing for a potential surge to $80,000.

On Deribit, a platform that accounts for the vast majority of the multi-billion dollar cryptocurrency options market globally, $80,000 call options (derivatives betting on a price increase above that level) have become the most actively traded. This has surpassed the $60,000 put options that dominated during the recent price declines.

As of press time, according to Deribit data, open interest in $80,000 put options exceeds $1.6 billion, with each contract representing one Bitcoin. Open interest in $60,000 put options is $1.41 billion.

Bitcoin prices have rebounded from lows near $67,000 earlier this week to above $70,000, partly due to pressure on oil prices from the temporary ceasefire between the US and Iran. Analysts say continued weakness in oil prices could help alleviate inflation concerns, potentially strengthening the case for a Federal Reserve rate cut—a backdrop that often supports risk assets, including Bitcoin.  On-chain data provides some additional support for the bullish view.

Furthermore, analysts at 21Shares believe the stock has further upside potential, potentially reaching $100,000 by the end of June under favorable conditions.

However, risks remain. The ceasefire agreement is fragile, and any renewed escalation could push up oil prices, thereby dampening market risk appetite and limiting Bitcoin's gains.

Later today, the US will release its Q4 GDP data. While this historically relevant data may not have an immediate impact, any major surprise, good or bad, could trigger short-term market volatility. Stay alert!

Japan has taken a significant step in regulating the cryptocurrency market. On April 10, the Japanese government cabinet approved an amendment to the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act, officially paving the way for crypto assets to be classified as “financial products.”

This development means that crypto assets, previously considered a “means of payment” under the Payment Services Act, will now be subject to a stricter regulatory framework.

The new regulations aim to increase transparency and investor protection in the cryptocurrency market. Accordingly, insider trading will be prohibited, and issuers will be required to report annually.

In addition, the official title of companies operating in the sector will change. The current definition of “crypto asset exchange operator” will be replaced with “crypto asset dealer”.

The new regulations also significantly increase penalties. Companies operating without registration will face sentences of up to 10 years in prison or fines ranging from 3 million to 10 million yen.

Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama emphasized that the change aims to ensure market fairness and transparency. Katayama stated that the new framework will increase investor confidence.

If the bill is also approved by the Japanese parliament, the regulation is expected to come into effect in 2027. Experts say this step could also set an important benchmark for global cryptocurrency regulations.

Since February 2024, Bitcoin Cash has been trading within a range (purple) from $272 to $685. The altcoin has tried, and failed, to reach the range highs thrice since December 2024.

In 2025, the mid-range support at $478 acted as support multiple times. Over the past month, it has been tested as a resistance. The failure to break beyond this level during the mid-March crypto rally confirmed that bears were in control.

The $443 low from the October crash was being retested as resistance at the time of writing. Further price losses will likely arrive in the coming months.

Long-term investors can wait for a drop below $300 before looking to buy BCH.

The 4-hour chart showed a bearish swing structure. The short-term range between $448 and $484 was breached at the start of April. The range lows were being retested as resistance at the time of writing.

Moreover, using the H4 swing move downward, a set of Fibonacci retracement levels (cyan) was plotted.

The 50% level at $449.2 has been tested, and the price was beginning to fall lower from there.

There is a chance the current bounce could extend toward $455-$465.

However, the direction of the trend was bearish, and Bitcoin Cash traders need to prepare for a price drop in the coming weeks.

Despite losses on both Bitcoin prices and its holdings, the strategy continues to buy Bitcoin. In Q1 of this year, the company made 12 different Bitcoin purchases, the smallest of which was $40 million.

By the end of Q1, the company had spent over $7 billion on Bitcoin in three months, adding over 89,000 coins to its already large Bitcoin reserves.  This brings the company's total spending on Bitcoin over the years to over $57 billion.

Despite reporting billions of dollars in losses, the company has resumed buying Bitcoin. On April 6, the company reportedly made another purchase of 4,871 Bitcoins at an average price of $67,718. This transaction cost Compass $329.9 million, bringing its total Bitcoin spending to date to $58.02 billion.
