$XRP could be gearing up for a move ahead of the 2026 midterms, and crypto analyst Zach Rector breaks down what’s going on behind the scenes.

He points out that markets are currently stuck in a “liquidity squeeze,” driven by rising global debt, geopolitical tensions, and capital outflows, something even the IMF has flagged. Add to that the yen carry trade unwind, private credit stress, and oil price swings from Middle East tensions, and it’s creating a broader “global margin call,” where assets, including crypto, face selling pressure.

At the same time, inflation is picking up again, with the U.S. PPI hitting around 4%. Interestingly, he said that liquidity isn’t gone; central bank balance sheets hint it’s already creeping back quietly.

Still, he keeps the sentiments slow: expect a “drop before the pop.” A deeper shakeout could come before things turn bullish.

Reason 1: Liquidity Injection & Lower Rates

The first trigger is the central bank’s participation. With economic stress building, he expects rate cuts and fresh liquidity injections. A new Fed chair is also expected soon, potentially accelerating this change. More liquidity means more capital flowing into risk assets like $XRP.

Reason 2: Clarity Act & Regulatory Green Light

The second trigger is regulation. The Clarity Act is moving forward, and recent SEC guidance has already opened doors for builders on the $XRP Ledger. This removes a major roadblock that held back development for years.

With compliance already built into the system, $XRP stands in a strong position as institutions look for legally clear platforms.

Drift Protocol said it has secured a proposed recovery package of up to $127.5 million from stablecoin giant Tether as it works to compensate users following its April 1 exploit and prepare for a relaunch.

The Solana-based trading platform outlined the plan in a recovery update on Thursday, detailing a broader collaboration that also includes about $20 million from other partners.

The package is structured around a mix of capital and ongoing support. It includes a $100 million revenue-linked credit facility, an ecosystem grant and loans to market makers, with funds directed toward a dedicated recovery pool for affected users.

Drift said the pool is designed to address roughly $295 million in outstanding user losses over time as exchange revenue accrues and any recovered assets are added back.

To distribute claims, the protocol plans to issue a separate recovery token to impacted users.

The token, distinct from the DRIFT governance asset, will represent a claim on the recovery pool and is intended to be transferable. This will allow users to access liquidity ahead of full repayment, according to the incident report released April 16.

Drift’s relaunch will also bring a structural shift in how the platform operates. Per the team, it will move its settlement layer from USDC to USDT, with Tether providing a market-making support facility to help ensure liquidity at launch.

Momentum is building in Washington for the long-awaited CLARITY Act, with JPMorgan (JPM) pointing to signs that negotiations may be nearing a breakthrough.

JPMorgan said discussions among lawmakers and regulators suggest the legislation is close to completion, with only a small number of issues still unresolved in a Wednesday report.

One senior policy official noted that the list of contentious items has narrowed from roughly a dozen to just “2–3 issues,” while debate around stablecoin rewards is now “in a good place.”

The CLARITY Act is designed to define how digital assets are regulated in the U.S., including how oversight is divided between agencies such as the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). It also addresses how stablecoins and decentralized finance platforms should be treated under existing financial rules.

Lawmakers involved in the discussions struck an optimistic tone. A Senate staffer familiar with the process said the draft legislation is “very close,” with remaining questions around areas like DeFi oversight and token classification potentially resolved in the near term, according to the report.

One of the most closely watched debates centers on whether stablecoin issuers should be allowed to offer yield-like rewards to users. The issue has drawn pushback from banks, which argue such features could replicate deposit-taking without the same regulatory safeguards.

The latest proposals could find support from both crypto firms and traditional financial institutions, according to JPMorgan.

The idea focuses on gradually phasing out and eventually freezing older Bitcoin addresses that could become vulnerable if quantum computers reach sufficient power to break current cryptographic standards.
Multi-Phase Migration Plan
The proposal, outlined in Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP-361) on GitHub, builds on earlier work from BIP-360 and introduces a new output type called Pay-to-Merkle-Root (P2MR). This structure is designed to reduce exposure of public keys, which are currently one of the main theoretical attack surfaces for quantum computing.
The plan is divided into several stages:
Phase 1: Restrict legacy addresses
Users would be prevented from sending BTC to quantum-vulnerable address types, encouraging migration toward upgraded wallet formats.
Phase 2: Enforce full transition (two years later)
Any wallets still using outdated signature schemes would lose the ability to send Bitcoin entirely, effectively forcing full ecosystem migration. Funds left in legacy formats could become unusable if not upgraded in time.
Phase 3: Possible recovery mechanism (under discussion)
Developers are also considering a potential recovery pathway for users who fail to migrate in time, although this remains highly experimental and has not reached consensus.
Community Debate
The proposal is driven by long-term concerns that advances in quantum computing could eventually undermine Bitcoin’s current cryptographic security model. Supporters argue that proactive upgrades are necessary to protect the network before such threats become practical.
