Ripple holds above critical threshold as risk-on sentiment expands


Ripple ($XRP) is trading at $1.44 at the time of writing on Friday, its upside seemingly capped by its weekly peak around $1.47. Still, the overall tone remains bullish as the remittance token holds above key support levels at $1.40 and $1.30.

$XRP buoyant amid renewed retail and institutional demand

The $XRP derivatives market is gaining traction as Open Interest (OI), reflecting the notional value of outstanding futures and options contracts, increased to to $2.71 billion on Friday from $2.58 billion the previous day.

On Monday, the OI averaged $2.38 billion, underscoring growing risk appetite and retail capital influx. $XRP requires a highly concentrated retail market to sustain short to medium-term gains.

$XRP spot Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) also uphold a positive outlook, evidenced by the $11.87 million in inflows on Thursday. SoSoValue data shows that US-listed $XRP spot ETFs have maintained a bullish streak for five consecutive days, bringing cumulative inflows to $1.26 billion and net assets under management to $1.08 billion.

Bitcoin Hits $78K as Trump Says Strait of Hormuz Is Fully Open
Bitcoin surged on April 17 after the US President Donald Trump said the Strait of Hormuz was open again and shipping passage was being restored.

In a Truth Social post, Trump wrote that Iran had announced the strait was “fully open and ready for full passage.” He added that sea mines had been removed, or were being removed, with the help of the United States.

Earlier today, Trump posted again that Chinese President Xi Jinping was “very happy” that the Strait of Hormuz was open or rapidly opening. He also said that a meeting coming up in China could be historic.

The market reacted fast as Bitcoin jumped to a 10-week high above $78,000, reaching around $78,400 for the first time since February 4.

At press time, $BTC is trading at $77,163 and is up 3% on the day. Over the past seven days, Bitcoin has been up 6.37%. Ethereum rose 3% after the announcement and is up 5.88% over the weekly period.

Why Markets Moved So Fast

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important oil shipping routes in the world, carrying roughly one-fifth of global crude supply.

Any threat to the route can push oil prices higher and pressure global markets. Reopening the passage reduces supply fears and lowers immediate stress in risk assets.

The rally also came as Trump claimed more progress in talks with Iran. He said both sides would work together to clear mines from the strait.

Trump also said a permanent peace deal between the US, Israel, and Iran was “mostly complete,” with more talks likely this weekend. He added Iran had agreed to suspend its nuclear program indefinitely and would not receive frozen US funds.

Conflicting Signals Remain

The rally came despite mixed responses from Tehran. Iranian lawmaker Mahmoud Nabavian rejected claims that the strait was fully open.

As the market continues to fluctuate with price volatility and cautious sentiment, Stablecoins are taking on an increasingly important role as a safe haven for investors seeking stability and yield. According to recent data from CryptoQuant, there has been a dramatic change in how investors are using stablecoins to protect their investments, create yields, or escape from volatility. Since February, Nexo has averaged $8 million/week in stablecoin deposits. Recently their average weekly stablecoin deposit amount has risen to $15 million, a dramatic shift in how investors are viewing the exchange.

This implies that even if the broader market is currently experiencing some weakness or indecision, capital is not leaving the ecosystem. Instead, capital is being relocated into vehicles that generate passive returns and are yielding interest on idle cash to investors until the macroeconomics stabilizes again.

The Flight to Quality – Why Nexo?

The sharp increase in activity on Nexo suggests that more investors are considering CeFi options for dollar-pegged products that provide attractive yields in the form of interest. This preference is growing compared to traditional assets like USDT or USDC. Given the current “bearish market”, the risk/reward profiles of holding volatile assets are not very attractive for most investors. Moving their capital to Nexo provides investors with an opportunity to receive yields in the form of interest more than 10%; in essence, they are compensated through interest for waiting.

Bitcoin’s fresh rally is raising a strange contradiction in the market. It is printing green indexes while sentiment refuses to follow. $BTC managed to breach the $77,000 for the first time in 11 weeks, but bears’ bets dominated the liquidations.

The global crypto market cap surged by almost 3% over the last 24 hours. It currently hovers around $2.61 trillion. The digital assets market’s 24-hour trading volume spiked by 12% to hit $172 billion. This suggests that traders are speeding up their positions.

CoinGlass data shows that more than 164,835 traders were liquidated in the last 24 hours. The total liquidations went on to hit $747.81 million. However, the largest single wipeout came from a $BTC/USD trade worth $15.75 million on Hyperliquid.

Bitcoin rally triggers Short Squeeze?

Bears were seen bleeding as more than 78% of the liquidated positions turned out to be short bets. More than $585 million worth of short bets were liquidated in the period. Data shows that Bitcoin itself accounted for around $378 million of the total liquidations. Over 91% of the liquidated positions ($344 million) turned out to be short bets. This suggests that traders were hoping for Bitcoin price to remain low or fall, however, $BTC price jumped by more than 3% in the last 24 hours to peek $78,000.

Yet even as bears bleed, conviction hasn’t flipped. Funding rates for perpetual futures remain negative. This signals that leveraged traders are still betting against the rally. This bearish positioning has now persisted for roughly 46 consecutive days. This is reportedly one of the longest such stretches since the collapse of FTX in 2022.

Iran declares Strait of Hormuz fully open, Bitcoin flirts with $77K

The Strait of Hormuz has been fully reopened to commercial shipping during the ongoing ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, with ships required to follow a designated route established by Iranian authorities, said Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi in a Friday statement.

Bitcoin inched higher toward $77,000 on the news after trading earlier in the $74,600-$75,746 range, while oil prices tumbled. Crude dropped 11.5% to near $84 and Brent declined more than 10% to around $89.

President Donald Trump responded by thanking Iran for the move.

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil transportation, witnessed a full closure in early March 2026 as tensions escalated between the US and Iran following military actions initiated by the US. The crisis led to the longest period of oil supply disruptions since the 1973 oil embargo, with prices exceeding record highs and severe impacts on global markets.
