A proposed court deal in the movie2k case could put another 57,000 Bitcoin within reach of the German state, reviving a supply-overhang story that the market thought had largely passed after Saxony’s 2024 Bitcoin liquidation. Local news MDR reported this week that the presiding judge has outlined a possible agreement that would let Saxony keep the €2.64 billion ($3.112 billion) already raised from last year’s Bitcoin sale and potentially obtain access to additional coins allegedly still controlled by the main defendant.

The case centers on the former operators of the illegal streaming portal movie2k.to, now on trial. The lead defendant, 42, is charged in part with commercial money laundering, while a second defendant, 39, faces money-laundering and tax-evasion allegations. The original copyright offenses tied to roughly 220,000 unauthorized works are now time-barred, but the fight over the Bitcoin fortune remains very much alive. After the main defendant’s arrest in 2023, authorities received 49,858 $BTC, which were later sold in June and July 2024 for about €2.64 billion.

According to MDR’s reporting, the judge sketched the deal on Monday as a way to shorten proceedings rather than litigate every alleged money-laundering violation one by one. Under that outline, the main defendant would confess and receive a prison sentence of one to one-and-a-half years, suspended on probation, while the co-defendant would receive eight to 12 months, also suspended. The real market-moving clause is elsewhere: Saxony would be able to lawfully confiscate the 2024 sale proceeds, and the defendant would also hand over access to another 57,000 $BTC (worth roughly $4.224 billion) that prosecutors believe he still controls.

Bitcoin is still hovering near $75,000 as it hits a wall of supply while institutional demand remains steady, with traders weighing progress in U.S.-Iran peace talks during a two-week ceasefire.

The CoinDesk 20 (CD20) index rose around 1.9% in the past 24 hours, compared with bitcoin’s 1%, amid reports of a ceasefire extension, improving risk sentiment.

The increases come alongside a softer U.S. dollar, which slipped to a near six-week low, and easing Treasury yields, conditions that often support crypto prices by lowering the relative appeal of holding cash. Gold also gained, pointing to a market balancing risk appetite with hedging demand.

Still, the backdrop remains tense. The U.S. blockade of Iranian ports and Iran’s threats to disrupt shipping routes in the Persian Gulf and nearby waterways continue to cloud the outlook for the global economy.

Energy supply shocks have already begun feeding into inflation expectations, a factor that could shift central bank policy and ripple into crypto markets.

Onchain data also show bitcoin supply tends to appear when prices reach key cost-basis levels for short-term holders. That’s around $76,800, a level that could act as resistance as investors cash out when breaking even.

Derivatives positioning

Crypto futures open interest (OI) has risen 2.5% in the past 24 hours even as trading volume dropped 16% and liquidations fell 48% to $220 million.

The divergence suggests traders are adding or holding positions despite a slowdown in activity, pointing to a buildup of exposure without strong conviction. The sharp decline in liquidations indicates reduced volatility and fewer forced exits.

However, not all indicators are bullish. Funding rates for ETH futures remain weak and have even dipped into negative territory multiple times, showing that many traders are still betting against the rally. This reflects a level of skepticism despite the recent price recovery.

Another concern is declining activity on the Ethereum network. Revenue from decentralized applications has dropped sharply, and competition from newer blockchains is increasing. These factors are raising questions about whether Ethereum can sustain strong growth in the future.

Overall, while institutional accumulation and spot demand are supporting ETH’s recovery, mixed signals from derivatives markets and weak network activity suggest that the rally may face challenges ahead.

Drift gets $148 million funding from Tether and partners as it replaces Circle stablecoin with USDT after massive exploit

Drift Protocol, the victim of a recent North Korean exploit, plans to relaunch with Tether's $USDT as its settlement layer after securing a proposed funding package of up to $147.5 million from the stablecoin issuer and partners, the companies said on Thursday.

The deal includes up to $127.5 million from Tether and $20 million from the other partners, structured to support user recovery following Drift’s April 1 exploit and to reboot the platform as a $USDT-based perpetual futures exchange on Solana. Previously, the platform used Circle's stablecoin $USDC as its settlement layer.

The rescue package combines a revenue-linked credit facility, ecosystem grants and loans to market makers. A portion of trading revenue, alongside committed capital, will be directed to a recovery pool aimed at covering roughly $295 million in user losses over time.

The funding comes after a North Korea-linked group infiltrated Drift Protocol, posing as a quantitative trading firm for about six months before carrying out an exploit that was more than $270 million on April 1. Drift's governance token, DRIFT, has lost about 70% of its value since the exploit.

Circle came under fire from the crypto community for its seeming unwillingness to halt the money transfer after the exploit. The attacker moved about $232 million in $USDC from Solana to Ethereum using Circle’s cross-chain transfer protocol. Some critics, including blockchain investigator ZachXBT, said Circle could have moved faster to blacklist wallets and freeze funds to prevent (or at least slow down) the attacker from moving the assets.

However, Circle's didn't take any such actions due to legal risks.
