Strategy Adds 22,337 Bitcoin In $1.57B Purchase, Fifth-Largest In History
Bitcoin treasury firm Strategy has just revealed a new acquisition involving 22,337 BTC, making it the fifth-largest purchase ever by the company.
In a new post on X, Strategy co-founder and chairman Michael Saylor has shared the details related to the latest Bitcoin acquisition completed by the treasury company. This buy saw the addition of 22,337 BTC to Strategy’s reserves, which is one of the largest purchases ever made by the firm.
The last time that the company made a larger buy was all the way back in November 2024, when it added 55,500 BTC in one swoop. That same month actually also saw two other purchases larger than the latest one, involving 51,780 and 27,200 tokens. Finally, there was also a larger acquisition of 29,646 BTC in 2020, meaning that the new buy is the fifth largest on record.

In US dollar terms, the purchase cost Strategy $70,194 per token or $1.57 billion in total. While its the fifth largest buy in BTC denomination, it’s only the ninth largest in the USD. The difference is due to the company having to spend more on some smaller stacks as a consequence of a higher BTCUSD rate at the time.

As is tradition, Saylor teased the new buy in a Sunday X post, this time sharing the company’s Bitcoin portfolio tracker with the caption “Stretch the Orange Dots.”

According to the filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Strategy funded this new acquisition using proceeds from its STRC and MSTR at-the-market (ATM) stock offerings. The purchase has now taken the firm’s total holdings to 761,068 BTC, equivalent to about 3.8% of the cryptocurrency’s supply in circulation.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission proposes modifications to revise Exchange Act Rule 15c2-11, stating that the rule only applies to equity securities, as this move provides guidance for over-the-counter (OTC) trading, potentially ending the question of whether the rules apply to other asset classes like crypto-linked products.

According to the official statement on March 16, the main focus of Rule 15c2-11 is on preventing certain manipulative and fraudulent trading schemes in the OTC equity markets. From now on, it would refer to only equity securities and sets out certain compliance requirements, where broker-dealers must gather and check key details before quoting or maintaining a market for securities in the OTC market.

Hester Peirce Supports Rule Clarification

Further, Commissioner Hester M. Peirce said she supports the SEC’s proposal to amend Rule. With that, Peirce noted that the 2020 amendments have raised questions regarding the applicability of the rule and argued that the Commission provided temporary guidance and relief for fixed-income securities.

She acknowledged that her own role in not clarifying the rule’s scope earlier, “ I continue to blame myself for failing to ensure that we made the scope of the rule’s application crystal clear during the adoption of amendments to Rule 15c2-11.”

Also, she encourages public comments on proposed revisions to Rule 15c2-11, as the comment period will remain open for 60 days, aiming to clarify its scope for distinct markets. She is particularly interested in how equity security should be defined, how the rule should apply to crypto assets, and what actions should be taken to establish expert markets.

Consequently, the recent increase in Spot CVD suggests that the current movement is backed by real buying and not just leverage. However, analysts warn that the sustainability of this rally will depend directly on Bitcoin's stability and the bulls' ability to absorb supply in the $1.60 zone.

In this sense, short-term traders consider that a pullback toward the $1.40 or $1.45 area could represent a strategic entry opportunity. Thus, the market seeks to establish a solid floor before attempting to attack higher levels that have not been consolidated in the last fifteen months.
