Why Are Bitcoin, Ethereum and XRP Prices Surging Today?

Crypto markets are having a strong Tuesday. Bitcoin jumped nearly $4,000 in 12 hours, hitting $74,461. Ethereum surged 7.85% to $2,366 and XRP climbed 3.11% to $1.36. The total crypto market cap crossed $2.52 trillion, adding over $100 billion in a single day.

The move was fast and largely mechanical. Here is what actually drove it.

The Short Squeeze That Started Everything

Reports of potential progress toward a US-Iran deal acted as a catalyst across risk assets. Traders who had been betting against the market were caught badly positioned and forced to close their short positions in a hurry.

The result was a cascade of $425 million in short liquidations, part of a total $530 million wiped from leveraged positions on the day. When shorts get forced out at scale, they buy to close their positions, which adds buying pressure on top of buying pressure. That mechanical dynamic is why the move looked so sudden and aggressive.

Over $300 million in crypto shorts were liquidated in the 12-hour window around Bitcoin’s spike to $74,500.

Institutions Were Already Buying Before This

The short squeeze was the trigger but it landed on top of genuine institutional demand that had been building.

Michael Saylor’s STRC raised $1.15 billion in a single day for Bitcoin purchases, signalling that corporate appetite for BTC has not slowed despite weeks of geopolitical uncertainty. The SEC and CFTC’s joint March 2026 guidance, which formally classified Bitcoin and Ethereum as digital commodities, is also continuing to encourage institutional participation by reducing the legal ambiguity that kept large allocators on the sidelines.

The crypto market is currently showing a 93% correlation with the S&P 500, confirming this is a macro-driven move rather than something specific to crypto.

Bitcoin rebounds above $74,000 in 'risk-on snapback' despite persisting Middle East tensions

Bitcoin climbed 4.9% above $74,000 late Monday, while Ethereum jumped 7.9% to $2,365, as traders weighed the impact of unresolved U.S.-Iran tensions.

Crypto-related stocks closed higher on Monday, with Circle jumping 12% and Bullish rising 7.5%.

WTI crude oil fell 2% to $96.8 per barrel after briefly rising to around $105 on Sunday.
Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other major cryptocurrencies rebounded late Monday in a "classic risk-on snapback," as traders continue to digest the protracted U.S.-Iran conflict, analysts said.

Bitcoin climbed 4.9% over the past 24 hours to $74,414 as of 12:55 a.m. ET Tuesday, offsetting weekend losses, according to The Block's crypto price page. The world's largest cryptocurrency fell to a low of around $70,600 earlier in the day.

Ether jumped 7.9% to $2,365, while XRP added 3.2% to $1.37, and Solana gained 4.9% to $85.97. The GMCI 30 index, which tracks the performance of the top 30 cryptocurrencies, rose 4.9%.

The crypto market rebound came alongside a broader rally in U.S. stocks, with crypto-related equities closing higher on Monday. Circle jumped 12%, Bullish rose 7.5%, and Coinbase gained 3.9%.

Digital asset investment products attracted $1.1 billion in inflows last week, marking the strongest weekly total since early January, as improving risk appetite lifted demand for crypto exposure.

According to a CoinShares report, the US accounted for $1.06 billion of the weekly total, or about 95% of all inflows, far outpacing other regions. Germany posted $34.6 million in inflows, while Canada and Switzerland added $7.8 million and $6.9 million, respectively.

Bitcoin led all assets with $871 million in inflows, pushing year-to-date inflows to just under $2 billion. At the same time, short Bitcoin investment products saw $20.2 million in inflows, their largest weekly total since November 2024, suggesting some investors are still positioning for downside or using bearish products as hedges.

Ethereum posted a notable rebound with $196.5 million in inflows, although CoinShares said it remains one of the only major digital assets still in a net outflow position on a year-to-date basis. XRP brought in $19.3 million, while Solana recorded minor outflows of $2.5 million.

One analyst on X, however, is not buying it, and his reasoning is based on one of the most consistent patterns in Bitcoin’s price history.

Why Rising Bullish Sentiment Can Cause More Downside
Bitcoin’s sentiment is now slowly turning bullish again, which is a reflection of its price action in recent days. However, according to crypto analyst Max, the gradual return of optimism across social media and trading circles is a warning sign.

Max, who shared his outlook on X alongside a multi-cycle Bitcoin chart, proposed that the re-emergence of bullish sentiment at this point is precisely what should concern investors. “When sentiment slowly starts turning bullish again,” he wrote, “that’s usually your sign that the bottom isn’t in yet.”

Max pointed out that recent discussions around a cycle bottom forming already, along with predictions of a historic rally, mirror sentiment conditions that have always appeared before further downside moves. In short, the crowd turning optimistic too early could mean the market has not yet completed its corrective phase.

This outlook is based on the fact that the Bitcoin price has not yet produced the structural conditions that have historically confirmed cycle lows. He identifies three specific cycle low signals that are currently absent on the Bitcoin chart: total capitulation, repeated sweeps of the lows, and a confirmed change in market structure on the weekly timeframe.
