SpaceX is holding onto 8,285 bitcoins valued at $603 million even as the company reported a nearly $5 billion loss for 2025, new data shows.

The aerospace firm keeps its digital currency in Coinbase Prime custody and has not sold any despite the financial hit, according to the data from Arkham Intelligence and The Information report published Friday. The loss is a complete turnaround from the previous year when SpaceX made about $8 billion in profit on sales between $15 billion and $16 billion.

The company’s bitcoin balance stayed steady since the middle of 2024 after hitting a peak value above $1.6 billion during October 2025 when bitcoin reached record highs. SpaceX now ranks as the fourth-biggest known corporate bitcoin owner, trailing only Strategy, Marathon Digital, and Riot Platforms.

SpaceX filed for an initial public offering last month that will require the company to reveal its bitcoin holdings in public documents for the first time. This could force the company to make accounting choices under new FASB rules that started in late 2025.

The Short Squeeze That Started Everything

Reports of potential progress toward a US-Iran deal acted as a catalyst across risk assets. Traders who had been betting against the market were caught badly positioned and forced to close their short positions in a hurry.

The result was a cascade of $425 million in short liquidations, part of a total $530 million wiped from leveraged positions on the day. When shorts get forced out at scale, they buy to close their positions, which adds buying pressure on top of buying pressure. That mechanical dynamic is why the move looked so sudden and aggressive.

Over $300 million in crypto shorts were liquidated in the 12-hour window around Bitcoin’s spike to $74,500.

Institutions Were Already Buying Before This

The short squeeze was the trigger but it landed on top of genuine institutional demand that had been building.

Michael Saylor’s STRC raised $1.15 billion in a single day for Bitcoin purchases, signalling that corporate appetite for BTC has not slowed despite weeks of geopolitical uncertainty. The SEC and CFTC’s joint March 2026 guidance, which formally classified Bitcoin and Ethereum as digital commodities, is also continuing to encourage institutional participation by reducing the legal ambiguity that kept large allocators on the sidelines.

The crypto market is currently showing a 93% correlation with the S&P 500, confirming this is a macro-driven move rather than something specific to crypto.

Transactions can be blocked
Compliance can be enforced externally
In contrast, Bitcoin operates without a central authority. As BTC advocate Justin Bechler points out, there’s no issuer to pressure and no mechanism to freeze funds. That makes it uniquely attractive in sanction-heavy environments.
The Practical Challenge
While the idea sounds powerful, execution is another story.
Estimated tolls per tanker range from $200,000 to $2 million. Handling payments of that size quickly is not trivial.
Some speculate the use of the Lightning Network for near-instant settlement. But in reality:

Bitcoin's breakout past $74,000 on Monday got a helping hand from Japan.

Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda cooled expectations for an interest rate hike at the upcoming April 28 policy meeting, signaling a more cautious stance amid uncertainty over how the Iran war will affect Japan's economy.

Such decisions have shown to spillover to the crypto market in previous years. On August 5, 2024, a surprise BOJ rate hike triggered a yen carry trade unwind that crashed bitcoin from $64,000 to $49,000 in 48 hours.

The carry trade, where investors borrow cheaply in yen and deploy into higher-yielding assets including crypto, had become one of the largest sources of leveraged risk-asset exposure globally. A yen unwind tends to cause quick sell-offs in risk assets, with bitcoin and major cryptocurrencies the first to be hit.

But Ueda just signaled that trade stays intact for at least another month. Japan's 20-year bond auction on Tuesday drew its strongest demand since 2019, with a bid-to-cover ratio of 4.82 against a 12-month average of 3.27, confirming that institutional capital agrees the hiking cycle is pausing.

Twenty-year yields, near their highest since 1997, fell nine basis points after the auction.

A dovish BOJ keeps the yen weak, currently near 160 against the dollar. A weak yen keeps carry trade funding cheap. Cheap carry funding supports leveraged positions across risk assets, including the perpetual futures markets where bitcoin's rally is being built.

Data from last week showed $2.1 billion in new bitcoin open interest and $2.2 billion in ether open interest in 24 hours following the ceasefire, with coin-denominated OI confirming net new longs. Some portion of that positioning maybe funded, directly or indirectly, by the same yen liquidity that Ueda just preserved.
