The Bitcoin MarketMaker Buy Strategy

Crypto market expert Merlijn The Trader has presented a market structure model on X, showing that Bitcoin’s recent price action is unfolding in line with an institutional trading cycle. The chart framework, known as the MarketMaker Buy Model, argues that large institutional players move markets in predictable stages designed to transfer Bitcoin from emotional retail traders into stronger, long-term holders before pushing prices significantly higher.

According to the analyst, the first stage of the cycle, highlighted in the first green box on the chart, began with a “Distribution” phase that occurred between about $100,000 and $120,000 in mid-2024. During this period, Bitcoin traded in a choppy downward pattern. This type of movement indicated that large holders were selling their Bitcoin amid strong demand from retail traders buying aggressively near the market top.

The second stage identified by Merlijn The Trader is the “Flush,” marked by the red box on the chart. This phase saw a sharp and aggressive price decline designed to force weaker traders out of the market. Here, Bitcoin reportedly fell from $100,000 to $62,000, a roughly 38% drop.

One of the biggest short squeezes of 2026 came and went in a single session.

Bitcoin climbed to $78,000 late Friday, triggering $762 million in liquidations across 168,336 traders with $593 million of that on the short side, per CoinGlass.

By Saturday evening hours in Asia, bitcoin had pulled back to $76,091, up just 0.8% on the day, as Iran broadcast that the Strait of Hormuz was closed to maritime traffic again less than 24 hours after its foreign minister declared it fully open.

Two tanker owners told Bloomberg their vessels received Iranian radio transmissions shutting the waterway, with one supertanker reporting gunfire and aborting transit.

State news agency Nour said Hormuz had returned to "strict management and control by the armed forces" in response to a U.S. blockade of Iranian shipping. Several oil tankers that had raced toward the strait Friday on the initial reopening news turned back.

Friday's breakout rally ended up in a $590 million shorts rout, with bets on bitcoin accounting for $381 million in liquidations, the largest share, followed by ether shorts at $167. Shorts outweighed longs by nearly four to one, the cleanest short-heavy breakdown in a liquidation event since February.

The setup had been building for weeks. Funding rates on bitcoin perpetuals were pinned negative, meaning shorts were paying longs a premium to hold their positions.

Friday's Hormuz reopening was the catalyst that flipped it. Crude oil dropped nearly 10% to $85.90 per barrel on the initial headline, and bitcoin broke above the $76,000-$78,000 zone that has capped every rally attempt since the February 5 crash.

President Donald Trump then told reporters Friday night that Iran had agreed to an "unlimited" suspension of its nuclear program, though Tehran never confirmed the claim.

A short-selling campaign targeting Wall Street's "tax avoidance business" is now aimed at a multi-billion dollar asset management giant.

According to a recent letter to investors obtained by Bloomberg, short-selling firm Orso Partners has established a short position in Affiliated Managers Group (AMG). AMG is an investment firm managing $813 billion, and its holdings include AQR Capital Management, founded by Cliff Asness.

Orso's logic is straightforward: AQR's core growth engine in recent years—its tax optimization strategy—is facing a direct threat from tightening regulations. Once regulations are implemented, AMG's profits will be the first to be affected.

Following the report, AMG's stock price fell as much as 1.7% to $294.28 that day, completely erasing its earlier 2.9% intraday gain.


How large is this "tax avoidance business"?

The continuous rise in US stocks over the past few years has allowed wealthy investors to accumulate substantial taxable gains.  Wall Street subsequently saw the emergence of products called "tax-aware long-short strategies," specifically designed to help high-net-worth clients legally reduce their tax burden.

The operational logic is not complex: hold profitable stocks long-term to defer tax payments, while actively selling losing stocks to "reap the losses," using the losses to offset other gains, thereby reducing the current tax bill.

These strategies are currently available through various forms, including hedge funds, ETFs, and separately managed accounts. According to a previous Bloomberg report, the total size of these strategies has exceeded $1 trillion.

AQR is a leader in this field. The company has been heavily promoting tax optimization products since at least 2024, with related strategy assets growing tenfold in two years, reaching approximately $57 billion. In 2025, AQR's total assets increased
